From Fire & Ice:
The Devils had some interesting line combinations for this morning’s practice. Head coach Brent Sutter had rookie Nicklas Bergfors in Brian Gionta’s usual spot at right wing on the top line with Patrik Elias and Dainius Zubrus. Gionta moved to the second line with Zach Parise and Travis Zajac, filling the spot where the injured Jamie Langenbrunner used to skate.
Also notable was Sutter’s use of center John Madden at left wing on the third line with rookie Rod Pelley at center and Arron Asham on the right side. Madden’s longtime linemate, left wing Jay Pandolfo, was moved to the fourth line with Sergei Brylin at center and Mike Rupp and David Clarkson alternating at the other wing.
Madden scored two goals skating on the left wing in Wednesday’s 6-1 preseason win over the Islanders and Sutter indicated that splitting Madden and Pandolfo was more than just an experiment.

This could be interesting. Splitting Mad Dog and Pando will definately put Sutter’s mark on the team and clearly signal a departure from the suffocating shadow-line.
I, for one, like this move. How many times did we hear last playoffs that the Devils were taking their best players off the ice due to too much line matching? Also, Madden has good O-skills. Let’s turn him lose some more. I do think Clarkson may be a more natural fit on that 3rd line pairing.

what does that mean when theyre placed on waivers?

Now I’m reading that White does have eye damage and is out indefinately. Oh great, just what they need.

Denny,
When a player is placed on waivers, they are effectively deemed free game — the other 29 teams in the league can pluck that player from waivers if they decide so. If no other team wants that player though, they clear waivers and will be sent to their AHL team.

Who knows how long this shake up will last but I am interested in seeing it. Hopefully this is the line up we see in the last pre-season game. I must admit that while I love the Pandolfo-Madden combo, Madden looked really good playing LW, and Pelley did not look out of place playing C on that line. In fact, I thought Pelley looked good filling in for Madden last season.

I always felt this year we should see Pelley and Clarkson as evreyday players. With Asham coming over, I think Pelley and Clarkson will alternate as to who’s the odd man out. Both with travel and play with the team, but each game will be different as to who plays. The divisional games I see Clarkson playing more, do to his size and willingness to drop the gloves.
I don’t like breaking up Gio, Elias and Zub. I think Patty and Gio work well together and they can bring Zub into the mix hopefully he won’t miss a beat.
Parise, Zajac and Clarkson I actually think is a great line. However I haven’t seen Bergafors play yet, so I could be mistaken. However, Clarkson adds the grit that line would need. He could create a ton of room for Zack and Travis to do their thing, at the same time, park himself infront of the net and score on some rebounds.
I don’t think Corrente will be at this level much longer. He’ll play tonight, but I think for the start of the season he might be sent down to Lowell. I think he’s still a little young.
Is the game on Comcast tonight? Anyone know?

Marshall is way past his prime, maybe he can help some young guys down in Lowell.
Sutter should give Bergfors a real shot up in NJ. He has a ton of skill.

I looked ahead on My remote, and it’s not on, all of the major sports channels have college football on all night. I can’t wait until thursday. Maddog and Pando, were scoring stars in college then the Dev’s made them shut down the top lines and they lost the O, now they will put up better #’s, poor Pando, (no offense to 4th liners out there) but putting Him there is it an insult,or demotion? or is Sutter trying to have all 4 lines able to shut down and score and putting Pando there will put some skill there and accomplish that?

interesting about the top line being broken up, maybe Sutter wanted the Europeans together and then the north american line of Zach/Zajac/Gionta, which I think becomes their #1 line. That would also take the pressure more off of Elias
The other article in the Bergen Record was promoting Pando as the team’s captain, which makes perfect sense, as he has earned the respect of the locker room over the years for his play, and I doubt the “C” would affect how he plays, unlike what it did to Elias last year.
with Pando with Brylin and Clarkson as the 4th line, Sutter can now roll 4 lines and not worry about a drop in play
