The Devils (2-3-0) will engage in their first division-battle this year, as the Black ‘N Red road tour stops in Pittsburgh tonight.
Sidney Crosby — the NHL’s reigning scoring champion — struggled against New Jersey last season, potting only two goals over the season series. His counterpart and fellow rookie Evgeni Malkin, didn’t have as rough a time as he connected for four goals against The Devils last season.
As for the Devils, it’s good to see Patrik Elias not only looki
ng confident, but being productive as well. After flying almost out of sight during last season, Elias may very well be back to the old form that we all wet ourselves over circa 2000. Martin Brodeur showed his frustrations with his recent play by unleashing the beast all over the boards in Atlanta after Saturday’s 6-5 chaotic affair. Now is the time to turn it around, Papa Bear.
The Black ‘N Red defense has been questionable thus far, but tonight is definitely going to be a no-nonsense affair. Expect every hit to be thrown twice as hard, and every shot to have a little extra Miracle Whip on it. This is divisional hockey, boys!
The turnaround of the season (if there’s going to be one, that is) starts tonight. Hey Slingshot, consider your tuchas on the chopping block tonight. You are at a severe risk of becoming 2MA’s new whipping boy.
Including tonights contest, four of the Devils next five opponents will be Atlantic Division rivals as they face-off against Philadelphia, (tomorrow) and the Islanders, (Saturday) before finally wrapping up the journey against the Ranger$ in MSG (10/25). I think it goes without saying that these next four games will be the most significant of the road trip. The Atlantic is a very tight division thus far, with none of the five teams really breaking away from the pack. (Too bad Atlanta isn’t in the Atlantic!) If the Devils want to remain in the competitive mix and avoid chasing teams early, they will need to put up a solid effort over the next ten or so days. Allow me to demonstrate a winning formula:
STEP 1: Play 60 Minutes.
STEP 2: Win hockey game.
Not exactly as hard as it seems, guys.
As always, be sure to keep it right here for the mind-altering experience that is the 2MA LIVE-CAP!
