THE ZUBBIES ARE HERE!

Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the first annual ZUBBIE AWARDS!

Recall if you will, last season (I know it’s hard, pretend late April didn’t happen, that’s what I do).  Go all the way back to the second weekend of December.  It was a glorious time to be a Devils fan.  The Devils were in the midst of one of the wildest games of the year and possibly the most fun game I have ever had the pleasure of attending – a total 80s-style scorefest against the Rangers that the Red n’ Black took by a final score of 8-5.  During that game, one Mr. Dainius Zubrus notched his 21st goal as a Devil.

That evening, rather than waiting to get home and make a new ZubbieCounter update, I wrote it on a piece of paper, snapped a picture with my cell phone, and sent it along to Steve, who posted it on this very blog.  This started a discussion between Steve, Joe, and myself.  We decided to hold a contest, in which you, the 2MA reader, would submit (or Zubmit) your own ZubbieCounter updates.  We’d pick one for each goal, and in the end, you the reader would get to vote on which one you liked best, with the winner getting undetermined prizes.

The contest was a huge success for us – I didn’t realize how many entries we actually got until I went through the ZubbieCounter e-mail address again a few days ago.  There were some absolutely brilliant entries for each of his goals for the remainder of the season.

And then the playoffs happened.  We spiraled into an uncontrollable funk that we’re only just now finally breaking out of.  I’ve promised you the Zubbie awards for months now, and the time has finally come.

Below you will find each of the winners from last season.  On the main page, you’ll see our nifty new poll feature.  Simply go over there and vote for which one you like the best.  Vote only once please (I’m using an honor system here, but if I suspect monkey business, I’ll suspend voting a choose my own winner.  It’s my contest, I can do that, y’know).  Also, two nominees are nominated twice.  Because quite frankly, the two winners for the last goal of the season were both too funny.  Again, my contest, I can do what I want.  Booyah grandma.

Winner gets still-to-be-determined STUFF.  Said stuff will probably not even be determined until I have a box that I have to fill with something.  You will definitely get the Chico Resch autographed 2MA sticker, though, and probably a bunch of other awesome things.

So, without further ado, I present to you, your 2008-2009 ZUBBIE AWARD NOMINEES:

Steven O's Zubmission Steven O’s Zubmission

Wilson L's Zubmission Wilson L’s Zubmission

Jon C's Zubmission 1 Jon C’s Zubmission (24th goal)

Chris S (Rico)'s Zubmission Chris S (Rico)’s Zubmission

Kevin B's Zubmission 1 Kevin B’s Zubmission (26th goal)

Kristyn's Zubmission Kristyn’s Zubmission

Jon C's Zubmission 2 Jon C’s Zubmission (28th goal)

Kevin B's Zubmission 2Kevin B’s Zubmission (28th goal)

So there you have it.  Get to voting!  Since this is a ZubbieCounter contest, I say we let Zubbie decide when voting ends.  We’ll take votes until the end of the game in which Zubbie scores his 33rd goal as a Devil, or until 4 PM on November 15th.  Whichever happens first.  Probably the latter.  Either way, get your votes in now!

Another Zubbie Goal, Another ZubbieCounterContest Winner

Congratulations to Mr. Christopher S., aka “rico” of the glorious 2MA commenters nation.  Christopher’s zubmission featured two things – pronostication (he called it, you’ll see, in a previous thread) and an 80s one-hit-wonder.  That’s a tough combo to beat right there.

Congrats Chris, and to everyone else – here’s to hoping we add another ZubbieCounterContest entry tomorrow, yes?

On a related note, I promised something the other day.  When the ZubbieCounterContest was first announced, we said “undetermined free swag” would be awarded to the person who’s ZubbieCounterContest zubmission was voted to be the best at the end of the year.  Well, some of the swag is still undetermined, but we do have at least this for the winner, and I can guarentee you, no one else in the world will have one of these but the winner of this contest:

What you are looking at there is a 2 Man Advantage sticker, one of few left that was never distributed last year.  That writing on it?  That’d be the autograph of former Devils goalie and color commentator Glenn (Chico) Resch.  As I said, I promise you, the winner of the contest will be the only man/woman on earth who can claim they own a 2MA sticker autographed by Chico.  (Please note:  Chico does not have anything to do with the contest, and probably is unaware of it.  He was just nice enough to sign an autograph for me.) Other swag – likely including a 2MA shirt of some sorts and other fun stuff – will be determined as time goes on.

Now that we know what we’re playing for, boys and girls, I expect to see your ‘A’ game each and every time Zubbie scores from here on out!  Keep ’em rolling, and as always, thanks for reading and participating.

Mo-Town, Mo’ Problems.

With the dawn of each new NHL season, I wait very impatiently for the schedule to be released. When it finally is, I plan which games I want to attend, whether or not I’ll take a road trip, and other fun and extremely expensive ordeals. Then there is that game… that one single game that you want more than any other one. The one that makes you more wide-eyed than an all-night eight-ball-induced hallucination. That’s the way I always feel when I see the Devils squaring off with the Detroit Red Wings. So, let’s take a look at what tonight’s contest has to offer…

Ever since that fateful day back in 1995 the Devils have enjoyed very limited success against the fellas from mo-town. Winless at “The Joe” since 1996, the Devils will take to the ice against the defending Stanley Cup Champions without the likes of Brian Rolston, Bobby Holik, Andy Greene, Paul Martin, and world-class goaltender Martin Brodeur.

Wait… I was looking forward to this?!

Tonight’s contest had the potential to be one of the most entertaining showdowns of the entire season. Instead, it is shaping up more and more to be a crime scene with the victim being the Devils’ pride. However, I’m doing every little bit that I can to remain optimistic… and who else to supply a little pep than Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner. Langs issued the following statement in the Nov. 6 edition of The Bergen Record:

“We’re still a very good team and if anything it’s a chance for us to prove that it isn’t just him [Brodeur] like all of you always write.”

That’s exactly the mentality that I’ve had since I learned that Marty will be out for an extended period of time. This isn’t just a period of survival for the Devils, it’s a chance for them to silence the critics once and for all. It’s a chance for the team to show everyone what we, the fans, have known all along. That the Devils win because they are the Devils. The fans are united, and apparently (and more importantly) so are the players.

With enough emotion and heart, tonight could still be one to look back on come the end of the season. Then again, it could also give us flashbacks from those Devils teams of the ’80s.

I’ve officially tweaked myself out. Is anyone else scared sh!tless?!
