Devils Part Ways With Shanahan, Josh Cries A Little

In the “Stunning News of the Day” catagory: The Devils have cut veteran Brendan Shanahan. Or Shanny opted not to play. Or something happened that has ended in Shanahan no longer playing with the team.

My heart, she is currently breaking.

I’m stunned, and all I can really say is this: Pikkachu better be DAMN GOOD if his presence means we’re losing Shanny.

According to the ever-awesome TG of Fire & Ice, Shanahan’s next move – catching on with another team, retirement, working within the Devils organization – is still unclear.

Now I need someone else to get a throwback-style jersey of. Dammit.

Shanny Re-Ups

I have been a terribly lazy blogger this summer. And for that, I’m…well, not that sorry. But sorry nonetheless.

But something has dragged me out of the blogger doldrums. Mr. Gulitti on his Fire & Ice blog reports (at 5:30 AM, no less – hardcore, TG, hardcore!) that the Devils and Brendan Shanahan have agreed to a one0year deal and that Shanny will be in training camp when it opens in September.

Why is this awesome? Well, because I bought a $30 Brendan Shanahan St. Patrick’s Day tee-shirt last year and I want it to be relevant for more than two months.

But more importantly, it gives the Devils a little veteran leadership on the bottom lines, a guy who can play left or right wing (probably right), and a PP/PK specialist. I don’t know what the Devils are planning, but I could totally live with Shanny on special teams and the 4th line. Absolutely could live with that.

The drawbacks? Well, he IS kind of old. Will he break down? I guess that depends on how Mr. Lemaire chooses to use Shanny. Again, my vote here is 4th line and PP/PK specialist. But I guess we shall see. I like the signing though. I like it quite a bit.

Also, I suppose I owe everyone the ZubbieCounterContest voting, eh? Well, the Zubbies (as named by 2MA reader Kevin B. has dubbed them) will be coming before the season starts. Probably late August (I know, I know I said May/June. I lied. Sorry.)

See Ya, Niclas.

Niclas Havelid, we hardly knew ya.  This may not be a bad thing.

As reported by Mr. Gulitti over on Fire & Ice, Havelid has signed on to play with Linkoping of the Swedish Elite League.  So basically, we traded away Anssi Salmela for a couple of weeks of a meh defenseman and a low-level goon who may never make it out of Trenton.

And so, Niclas Havelid joins the esteemed ranks of the Ken Klees and Deron Quints of Devils lore.  Fare thee well, Niclas.  I guess.  Whatever.

Brookbank Mountain moves west

Late breaking news via TG of Fire & Ice – the Sheldon Brookbank era is officially over.  Bad-Ass Brookbank, no longer here to serve:

The Devils dealt the oft-scratched Brookbank to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the rights to center David McIntyre, a former Dallas draft pick who’s currently playing at Colgate University.

McIntyre has 13 goals and 30 points in 26 games with Colgate.  Essentially, the move brings the Devils a prospect and frees up a roster space.  Roster space is always nice.

Best of luck in Anaheim, Sheldon.  You will be missed, I guess.  Maybe.

Devil’s Got A New Diguise

Holy quotable Aerosmith, batman! Martin Brodeur has a new mask design!

Breathe…

I was just as shocked as you are. The main design of Marty’s world-famous mask will remain the same, but the devilish “J” that has always graced the upper part of his helmet, has now been changed over into an “MB30” logo.

The new design relates to the new website Marty will be releasing soon: martinbrodeur30.com.

There are some great quotes and insider info about all of this over at Tom Gulitti’s Fire & Ice Blog.

A new look for a new style, perhaps?
