Thoughts from Section 209: Devils vs Island-ddeeerrrrrssss, Nov 28, 2009

Well that was hardly a contest was it??? Still it’s nice to pound a team like cheap veal that is one, right??? Fret not Islander fans… they should be Kansas City’s problem soon!! Not much time here since we’re going to MSG to see the BU/Cornell game (hey I got it right!) in like an hour… so gotta rip this out!!

The Good:
– ROD PELLEY… he’s ANGRY!!! and INTENSE!!! And he’s GONNA PUNCH A BITCH (or is it “Choke a Bitch” I get my hangups confused) but damn he played ANGRY and that fight was most excellent… maybe there’s hope for ya yet Hot-Rod (no matter how much Rob hates you!!)
– Brian Rolston!! Welcome to the scoresheet… though please… NEVER again do the Lord Krang OMG I SCORED FOR REAL dance of shock ever again!!
– WE SCORED ON A FIVE ON THREE!!!!!!!! Our namesake is restored!!! And I loved the families RUNNING for the door before another “FUCK YOU SAM ROSEN” ensued!!!! :-)
– Bryce Salvador…. 26 minutes… plus 2 and the job of playing with the young guys to give them confidence.. helluva job Bryce!!!!
– it’s hard on a game like this where just about EVERYONE played good (after of the first period which was gross)… and not a bad effort was to be seen aside of the stiffs who see 4 and 7 minutes of “quality” ice time….so well done for everyone else!!!!

The Bad:
– Matt Halischuk had a pretty good game.. but he had one shift of FAIL I need to bring up again…he gets an empty net (being in perfect position off the Pelley rebound shot) and HITS THE POST CLEAN *ugh*, then falls over trying to hit someone at the Islander blue line trying to come back on defense… d’ohhhhhh
– Taking 5 penalties on the Islanders?? Really?? I guess the pk needed the practice… but cmon guys… a little sloppy!!!
– Well despite his two points and his +2… it really seemed like Langenbrunner was kinda… sucky out there (no this is not to annoy Kristin or however she spells it :p)… and still he should give those points to Halischuk!
– HOW THE HELL ARE YOU A MINUS ONE in a game like this?? Oh yeah… you’re Andrew Peters and the Pikachu… BRING BACK SESTITO!!!!!
– We’re so depleted now that the Rod Pelley bomb that Biron snagged actually looked impressive too…. oiii
– It was good to get Zharkov his NHL debut and the youth is exciting…. but I can’t remember not noticing a guy who had 5 shots like he did…..

The Funny:
– the two best signs from warm-ups:
** Greene is better then orange ?
** And DIE GOMEZ DIE!!!!!
(Someone is confused on opponent :p)
– Also from warm-ups we learned that Nic Bergfors HATES KIDS… he fired a head hunter over the boards (almost) that looked intended for some puck-wanting kids in the front row!!!
– Guy in DiPietro jersey walks in to 209… looks around… and sits in the first row… guess the bad hip is contagious and doesn’t let ya up the steps eh??
– That poor kid who had to do that name the song contest….. First of all she’s in a pink jersey (bad enough, WEAR THE TEAM COLORS!!!!), she’s like eight, and then they make her name “single ladies” (really not a song to be rocking to at 8 years old… well unless you’re 28 and still act it…)…and then they give her a gift pack that weighs 800 pounds…cmonnn!!! How the hell was that lil girl gonna carry it???
– the YOU LOVE CHEAP MEAT chant for anyone who bought dollar hot dogs has to be HEARD to really understood and laughed at people… sorry… but I tried!
– The best save of the night… was by ME…one of the 209ers was tossing free hot dogs… the guy behind me had two beers in hand and couldn’t hold on to it… it bounced off him and flew past me… *snap-GLOVE SAVE and cover*… I got skills yo!
– A first ever hat trick within ONE POST… as I was typing….
And its three …one….new jersey!!!!! (Elias[2-pp... fuck you sam rosen!] (Rolston, Zajac) {10:30} )
…oops no it aint, 4 – 1!!! (Parise[15]…aahhhhh (Greene… ANDY!!!, Langenbrunner… still sucked today :p) {11:54}
Wow, 5 – 1…. Will I ever finish this post?? :p (Rolston[8] (Mottau, Bergfors) {12:32} )
The best two minutes you will ever have fully dressed :-)
– After the fifth goal the section breaks out a BIRON SUCKS chant… 30 seconds into the chant he starts taking to the bench mopig the entire way… the whole timing and the visual of the “skate of shame”… most awesome!
The Almost-going-way-too-far with the Andy Greene Stuff:
– Seems EVERYONE had something to say with Andy Greene’s assist being STOLEN on the disallowed goal on replay….and they all knew I was gonna take it personally…..

** Josh Burnett: Whether it was in or not, you do not tell Andy Greene he has a goal then take it away. Andy Greene does not appreciate such antics.
** Deanna Over: Get some lavender candles and some eucalyptus massage oil for later tonight. Perhaps a strong bottle of red, as well. You can only hope he forgets, and it’s your womanly duty to help him along that path.

– And of course Andy gets one that NO ONE can take away… and…..
** Josh Burnett: Devils goal his 15th of the season scored by number 9, ZAAAAACH PAAARIIISSSEEEE (cue high-pitched tween girl screams)
Assisted by number 6, AAAAANDDYYYY GREEEENEEEE (cue high-pitched Mackie screams)

One more home game then it’s BUFFALO BOUND!!! Hope the lil bloggers up North are ready!!!!!!! :-)

Poor David Clarkson…

Poor, poor David Clarkson.

And poor us as well.

That’s why you stand up and face a Zdeno Chara slapshot head-on rather than wimping out and turning sideways.  Of course, I say this behind a laptop, and not on ice staring down the barrel of a 100 MPH slapshot from the guy who broke Al MacInnis’ fastest shot record last year.

Ouch.

So add Clarkson to the infirmary list for the Devils.  Y’know, the list that already includes our beloved Dainius Zubrus.  And Jay Pandolfo.  And Rob Niedermayer.  And Johnny Oduya.  And Paul Martin.

Know what list is growing just as fast as the injured list?  The rookies list.  Add Vladimir Zharkov to a list of rookies or first-year NHLers already containing Niklas Bergfors, Pierre-Luc Letourneu-Leblond, Matt Halischuk, Matt Corrente, Tyler Eckford (who’s on his way to Lowell right now), Illka Pikkarainen, Mark Fraser, and Tim Sestito.  Guess we’re no longer one of the oldest squads in the NHL, eh?  Small victories, my friends, small victories.

Zharkov was leading the baby Devils in scoring before getting called up, and according to the ever-awesome TG, will be skating on a line with Dean McAmmond and Matt Halischuk.

Seriously gang, read that again:  Our third line – the Devils traditional strength – is two rookies and Dean Mc-friggin-Ammond.  The injuries have gotten so bad, we’re using our training camp roster.  It’s a wonder Trenton and Lowell can even field teams at this point.

So now it’s Devils/Islanders in about a half hour.  Unfortunately, no LiveCap on my end this afternoon gang.  I’ll make sure to have another one happen soon, and I’ll also make sure to let you know well ahead of time when it happens.  In the meantime, enjoy your New Jersey Lowell Devils taking on the Islanders this afternoon.

Wait, the Sabres are good?

So who’d have thought that this stretch of games against the Rangers, Penguins, and Sabres would prove to be an early-season measuring stick?  I mean, Penguins, of course.  Rangers & Penguins?  Okay, maybe.  But where the HELL did the Sabres come from?

The Sabres sit at 6-1-1 coming into tonight’s game at The Rock.  This means that the Devils last three opponents will have had a total of FIVE combined losses on the season before the Devils got their hands on ‘em.

The win over the Penguins Saturday night was costly, however.  As you may know by now, both Paul Martin and Jay Pandolfo will be out 4-6 weeks due to seperate arm owies.  While Super Jay has been having a great year so far, he’s somewhat replacable in the lineup (Matt Halischuk probably gets regular playing time now).  But Paul Martin?  His loss could suck.  It could suck a lot.

I mean, because Paul Martin’s out, the Devils called up Cory Murphy.  THAT’S how much the loss of Martin sucks.  Granted, Murph was called up as a seventh defenseman, and won’t be in the lineup tonight, but still.  Our D-corps is pretty banged up in the early going, with Mike Mottau coming back from injury and Colin White and Bryce Salvador both puck magnets.  Factor in Johnny Oduya being less amazing than he has been, and our defense is basically Andy Greene and a buncha scrubs.  Lucky for us, Andy Greene = Wins.

The Devils are 5-0 on the road, which kind of sucks because tonight’s a home game.  In the friendly confines of Newark, New Jersey, the team is 1-3.  And the one win came against a surprisingly bad Carolina team.  That’s…not so good.  A win tonight, however, and all early-season home struggles are forgiven.

Come back here post-game for a Scott Mackie-style post-game recap!  Also, I’m not going to PROMISE it, but there’s gonna be a LiveCap coming eventually.  I haven’t forgotten, I just tend to be in class during the games.  I’ll set one up soon and let you, the loyal 2MA reader, know well in advance.  It’ll be a little party, it will!

Brian Gionta Goes Splat.

Crikey, it’s getting old. Brian Gionta just got pushed off the puck hard, and it looks like he hit both shoulder and head against the unforgiving Detroit boards. He skated off on his own power, but has yet to return to the game, which currently sits at 2-1 Detroit after two periods, on the strength of a pair of Marian Hossa goals. Parise notched a deflection off an Oduya slapshot for the Devils only tally so far.

Edit: As the third period is starting, it becomes apparent that Bryce Salvador has not returned to the ice either. Salvador was hit by a puck in the second period, leading to Hossa’s goal. Sigh.

So, the updated injury counter:

Martin Brodeur, torn bicep
Brian Rolston, high right ankle sprain
Bobby Holik, broken pinkie
Andy Greene, broken hand
Paul Martin, upper body soreness
Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, cracked orbital bone
Brian Gionta, unknown head/shoulder injury
Bryce Salvador, some kind of puck-to-knee injury

Add to that Matt Halischuk’s apparently serious leg injury suffered in the L-Devils game at Wilkes-Barre the other night, and the Devils are short EIGHT players, less than one calendar month into the season.

Ouch.

The Greene Monster goes down

The injury bug just won’t leave the Devils alone this season. First Brian Rolston’s ankle. Then Bobby Holik’s pinky. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond’s cracked orbital bone struck a blow to hyphen-lovers everywhere (see what I did there?). And now tragedy has even befallen the man, the myth, the monster…the Mister Andy Greene.

Andy apparently took a puck off the hand early in the Devils 6-5 shootout loss to the Maple Leafs Wednesday night. The Lean Greene Point-Producin’ Machine managed a career-high three assists despite the broken hand. Hell, maybe it was even because of the injury. Maybe it made Andy angry. You wouldn’t like Andy when he’s angry. Greene celebrated a birthday by getting his hand X-Ray-ed. That’s gotta suck, but Andy’s hardcore like that.

The puck that befell the Greene Monster came off the stick of Pavel Kubina, no less. Y’know, the guy who knocked Scott Stevens silly with a puck to the head a few years back. Greene’s injury is slightly less scary than Stevens’, though, and will shelve Andy for about a month, maybe more.

While the Devils must wait another four-to-six weeks to again Go Greene, one Sheldon Brookbank will be paired up with Mike Mottau as the Red n’ Black’s third pairing. Getcha Pepto Bismol ready.

So besides the terror-inducing duo of Mottau/Brookbank (inducing terror in Devils fans, I mean. Not so much the opposition), what else can we expect tonight? Welp, after taking part in his NHL debut and notching his first-career point with an assist, Matt Halischuk gets to take a cozy seat in the press box, as Niklas Bergfors gets to make his season debut for the Devils tonight. Since Niklas’ only other prior NHL experience was the season opener last year against Tampa Bay, and since he got hurt in that game and never made it back to the NHL, and since last season’s opener so thoroughly sucked – I say that game gets stricken from the record. Niklas Bergfors gets to start anew tonight, in his first ever NHL game. I don’t care what the record books show.

The Devils ride into tonight’s game on a three-game losing streak (yet still managing the charity point in two of the three), sitting at 5-2-2. The Thrashers come in as the second-worst team in the NHL, one point ahead of the Islanders and sporting a 2-6-2 record. The Thrashers recently fell victim to that evil injury bug themselves, losing No. 3 overall pick Zack Bogosian to a broken leg during a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Philadelphia last week.
