Thoughts from Section 209: Devils vs. Starrrrrrrrrrssssssss, 1/5/2010!

Happy new year and all that to ya! (I know I still owe a month in review… it’s half done, I swear and I’m hoping it’s done tomorrow, but you gotta write the more pressing piece first always….and not to mention I got a little bit of Dallas Cowboys fever right now… and CMON… you know you wanna see another Phily team lose, right?)….but another feel-good night and some very pleasant memories from the 1999-2000 Stanley Cup run and all the crazy stuff I’ll try to get to down below…. all in all a great night and a great win against a VERY erratic STAARRRRRSSSS team……

the Good:
— Patrik Elias…. welcome back to the scoresheet….all those passes that Andy over-shot you to make you skate harder and get in the right place are starting to pay off… yay!
— Zach Parise… my God nine shots on goal!! (I’ll get more into this when I do the month in review but I love how his level of play didn’t drop when he slumped and he keeps playing the same way hat-trick or ten-game drought be damned!!)… pretty good night for our personal “one man Jonas Brothers”… many ‘ginies were tingling (and an evil Mickey Mouse was counting the cash!)
— PL^3… yeah he hit… yeah he did his thing… but I saw some REALLY good board work and puck control and a little finesse to keep the play and the board work going (7:40 and more ice time then Rod Pelley tells ya Jacques liked what he saw too)… and this is a step in the right direction of leaving Andrew Peters in a ditch somewhere near Bayonne HS (it’s a big-ass school, plenty of hiding spots!)
— Bryce Salvador…. I’d swear he was announced as a scratch, but 14:00 from the press-box and he looked pretty good playing from there too… smart plays… and he adds a stability to the blue line that no one else not named Andy has brought to the team this year!
— so I hear mb30 broke the old mask and had to actually be Marty Brodeur for half the game…. I really wish he’d listen when the hockey Gods TWICE tell him something :p…. and yeah shutout #106… it wasn’t as dramatic as the last two were… it kinda felt like the Stars cashed out late in that game, but it’s still a lil bit nice to be a part of more history each time the score goes to zero (and how sick is it that like one of ever 5-some wins… is of the zero variety… that’s just sick to digest….)
— and shame on me almost forgetting to talk about lil Nicky breaking the damn bank with all the stuff he won in the Zamboni race during the first period… good lord our #1 draft pick is well taken care of by this team…always good to see it happen to the deserving fans (and it shut up a fool in 109 who said the good stuff doesn’t happen to those in the cheap seats!)

the Bad:
— there was no bad last night… I’m gonna to use that space for 2000 Cup memories and my Stanley Cup Party story in that old basement apartment back that Saturday night in June of 2000 🙂

the Funny:
— Brian Rolston… first shift… looks like he blew a tire jumping on the ice… and kinda reminded me of the Matvichuk (I think)… getting injured and crawling to the middle of the ice to block shots back in 2000 for the Stars…. I should remember better who it was that was a classic moment in maybe the best, and most exciting Stanley Cup Final of the 4 the Devils had and possibly the most exciting one I remember in my lifetime… but as he was falling and limping to the bench I mumble… hrrmmm… I wonder if anyone reminded him that he got traded for Claude that year and it took him like 18 months and a second trade to mentally recover (and talk about pressure to be traded for Claude… and then be in the trade that brought Andreychuk and ESPN’s first love child, Ray Bourque, that’s a TALL order…)
— so I had what I like to call my personal “moment of Cangelosi” last night (handy link of reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOEO4XuQCj4 … just so you know and get what I am talking about)
…. one of my running jokes of late is that when Tasha watches the game, her boys in Parise and Bergfors NEVER score (and even when they do she gets stuck on the escalator to not see it… and I get to yell CLOSE YOUR EYES and STOP LOOKING or GO TO THE BATHROOM, we need a goal!!!)… so on the Zajac goal I saw Bergfors swat at it… I swore he tipped it in…. so i text her and go… look you finally got to see your goal…..so when they announced it was Zajac’s goal… I kinda yelled to myself… “NINETEEN!!”… oops, well at least her Lordship wasn’t there to make fun of me for that and goddamit I am taller then our roaming gnome of parody fame!

the 2000 Cup run memories:
— the Devils did a GREAT job of reliving that Cup run… hell they even dug up Steve Kelley (I guess he was glad they remembered he was on the team.. he played like one game and 10 shifts in the entire playoff run)… it’s always good to see Claude in the house again too…Larry Robinson (we all remember that locker room beatdown/tirade too of course)…. Patrik Elias in game 7…. Jason Arnott in game 6…. the “six shots on goal game” (I swear I can still hear Sundin and Pat Quinn piss and moan they had more shots on goal then that)… Scott Stevens dominating Pavel Bure and then the world…. and that game 5 in the Cup Finals… the single greatest one on one goalie duel ever seen by human eyes…..It’s been 10 1/2 years it really was the right time to remember, look back, and smile at those awesome memories (and thoughts of a 110-recap season… my God I was burnt out that summer)
— Lord Krang: lol, sherry just listed “sykora getting knocked out” as one of the memorable moments of the 2000 cup run!
(and she’d be right….Petr Suckora only knows FAIL when he is on the ice as a Stanley Cup Finalist… the only two he’s won, he was unconscious in 2000, a healthy scratch last year…. and 3 times the loser when he played)… I love when the professionals think as I do :p
— I still need to recall the party at my house that night…. it was Brian… a hockey princess we no longer associate with, her BF at the time and we’re all just there watching the game…. I remember my “SHUT THE FUCK UP AND STOP POUTING OVER SYKORA WE’RE PLAYING A FOR A STANLEY CUP” rant (one of the reasons I no longer associate with said person… the sick obsession over mediocre to BAD hockey players and not caring about who her friends were… gee, a theme in my life eh :p)…. so I blasted her so bad the boyfriend kinda hid and curled in the corner…. so a few hours later Jason Arnott does the deed… I had one of those old “giant soda bottles of popcorn” wrapped in tin foil and a bowl on top of it to look like a mini-Cup… and yeah we filled it with champagne… I think I drank a whole bottle by myself that night…. and a few more friends came over… I was on the phone with two more… John and Jen walk in (I know the names don’t matter, I think the only person I still talk of all these people is Brian, and that could change as of his wedding in September *whistles*)…. they walk in… I’m already fuzzy and the last thing I remember that night was going “OHHHH, WINE!!!”…. and then dragging the mini-Cup and champagne stinky body to Rex Plex the next day to skate around with our Cup and sweat champagne in goalie pads!! Feel free to add your own memories and comments too… it’s the right place for it!

Captainbrunner = Hattrickenbrunner

Okay, so I gotta work on the name.  I can’t help it if Hat Trick doesn’t fit in as nicely for Langenbrunner as it does Andy Greene (Greenetrick!) or Niklas Bergfors (Bergtrick!) or Patty Elias (Hatrik, of course).

But yes, Jamie Langenbrunner, fresh off his addition to the roster of Team USA as token old guy, goes home to Minnesota and notches a hat trick in a game the Devils absolutely did not deserve to win, yet still managed to.  The win was entirely because of the Captain.  Well, okay, Jay Pandolfo (seriously!) and Martin Brodeur too.  Everyone else kind of sucked.  Even our beloved Andy Greene (we say it ’cause we love, Andy!).

But despite the majority of the team sucking, the Devils still topped the Wild, 5-3.  All because of Captainbrunner’s first career hat trick.  I’m amazed it’s his first.

So a brief jaunt into the Western Conference ends with an abysmal performance in a Chicago loss and a not-much-better performance in a Minnesota win.  But that’s the nice thing about this year’s team – they can still find a way to win even when they suck.  It wasn’t happening that way the last few years.

Now we can look forward to Tuesday against the Stars.  Why would anyone be looking forward to this game in particular?  Three reasons:  1) Stanley Cup in the house (and money raised by selling pictures with it goes to charity, always something we’re down with at 2MA), 2) Claude Lemieux is scheduled to be there, and 3) I’m gonna be sitting in the rich people seats that night.  Hooray for free food and pretending to be snobby in the Ice Lounge!

Devils vs. Carolina, 10/17/2009… Thoughts From Section 209!!

OH MY GOD WE WON A HOME GAME!!! THE STANLEY CUP IS OURS!!!
DOGS WILL LOVE CATS!!!
TONY ROMO WILL LOOK LIKE AN NFL QUARTERBACK AND NOT DUMBO ON HIND LEGS!!!
RANGER FANS WILL BE SMARTER… ok I pushed it too far….

Anyway… damn that was a big win on a more personal level then I’m fully getting into here (some of y’all know why :p), but talk about a load off the back here!!! Got a lot to get to here… and well two nights in a row is always a pain in the ass to be witty and fun throughout… let’s get to it!!!

the Good:
— OK… I’ll say it… he’s a douchebag and I’ll still hate him and he cures NOTHING until the playoffs, and I’m not acknowledging any of his regular season stats this year… I DON’T CARE… but holy hell it was nice for ONCE this year to see our goalie not only just show up this year BUT PLAY WELL… I give the boy credit when the boy deserves credit… yay MB30…have a cookie! Oddly enough I had an AWFUL vibe from him he pre-game… he was just kinda floating around… not really caring… no energy… no passion.. nothing… it was annoying me I admit….
— ANDY GREENE EQUALS DEVILS WIN!!! Say it once… say it again… post it on your lockers… in your bedrooms and in the Devils clubhouse and accept it!! (Hell he had a DAMN good move on that first period breakaway!!!)
— It was good to see that $1 hot dog night cures a case of “yankees fever” also!! (a small comment on the attendance last night… personally whatever… I want smaller crowds in the arena… MY TICKETS ARE PRICED TOO HIGH!!! I can get $10 seats at LA Kings games… yes LOS ANGELES!!!! I don’t wanna hear it and small crowds are my only hope!!)
— Kristyn Holleran Doc just used ‘PL3’s nickname hahaha
(ah it’s good to see my nicknames getting passed around… again!!)
— the last minute…. first thing… I LOVED the Devils domination and PUCK CONTROL down 6 on 5… a new aggressive that this team was LONG missing… Carolina NEVER got control… NEVER got set (DID YOU SEE THAT BRENT SUTTER you qutting pile of AIDS that is now ruining a Calgary team I much like… 3 blown leads ALREADY… in 2009, Brent??)… and my God that empty net goal lifted alot of mine and a bunch of other people’s chests!!!!

the Bad:
— the lines… I didn’t like em… I didn’t like the flow they had… I know we are a MAJOR work in progress now and there’s some ingredients missing from the cake, but still…. Parise-Niedermommy-Langs, Bergfors-Zajac-Halischuk, Roslton-Zubrus-Pandolfo , PL^3-Pelley- Clarkson… it just don’t flow and you can’t mess with what IS doing well with you… I know it’s October and this is the time to mess around (and I’ve been saying that for years)….I just didn’t like how it worked…
— 3 games in a row with a too many men on the ice penalty?? Really?? I know we’re not good, but trying to sneak a 6th guy in the play isn’t gonna get us anywhere… the Devils… like me… not so good on subtle ….
— speaking of stab your eyes out bad… ANOTHER 5 on 3 pp down the toilet… welcome to old school Devils POWERKILL… least there was no shortie tonight…..
— When Arlette does not sing the national anthem… we are angry… and when we are angry in the national anthem… we protest!! not loudly… and not like the standard idiot that INSISTS on yelling YEAH DEVILS or something stupid like that…. but when the word Stars comes up…. we steal one from the Texicans and psuedo-shout STAAAARRRRRRSSSS in a small protest… that is all!
— Hey Johnny Oduya… where the hell have you been this year??? You’re in total stealth mode man…..
— David Clarkson kinda got his face beat in during that fight… well he needs some nice ugly making scars anyway…. hell he was kinda quiet all night long….

the Funny:
— Lord Krang: my boss (a Devils fan) said last night that he wasn’t an Andy Greene fan. I wasn’t really surprised because this is the same guy that can’t stand Chico AND thinks the AIDS guy is cool, but still, my respect for him plummeted even further.
Josh Burnett He will learn. THEY ALL WILL LEARN!
Scott Mackie You should get him fired for hating the Greene Machine alone!
(and hell I taught you ALL the goodness of Oduya AND the Lean mean GREENE MACHINE!!!)
— Zach Parise tosses a lil girl a puck… yes her “ginie” tingles (it’s a South Park reference I am not being a pervert you asshole!)
and we all scream….AAAAAHHHHH in honor!!!
— Boy it was a rough night for lil Nicky…he hurts his back sliding under the banister (which he should know better then anyway)… there was a big mess of red gatorade (damn almost said Kool Aid… good Devils fan!) in the seats behind him… he had no one sitting by us to call crazy… then he gets yellow flagged by his dad for the CAM WARD SUCKS comment….. aww it’s a sporting event… I condone cursing then we all know that!!
— Second intermission… right outside 209…. Drunk lady took a header in concourse!! No you tube video sorry!! Them drunk high heels flew HIGH!!!
— Though speaking of the youtube… since I like the Stars and love their announcers… check out THIS gaffe by Huet tonight… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viz46U8G7_8
whoops!!!!
— Scott Mackie… aw crap… 5 on 3 time:
If we won’t score here:
1. We riot
2. Two man gets renamed

Uh-ohhhhh…
Oops??
Hasan Allahverdi Two-man advantage should now be called Two-man disadvantage. Or Two-man Advantage…NOT!
Josh adds in a few comments about renaming it… IT’S A TRAP… ah Admiral Ackbar! (but he texted me and I am not retyping them all….
Scott Mackie: Hey its been a one man show all season anyway right??
— and then of course… the end of the game pain…..
(Josh and Cousin Rob (though he’s fast climbing out of blondie-shadow) text me instead of following FACEBOOK protocol to annoy me on the end of the game)
Scott Mackie: No really, everyone remind me of 82 seconds
Next thing we know the us is gonna be invaded by an army of Argentina’s lamest women!!!
Scott Mackie…LANGS…. REALLY??? Damn that post…. and then Parise FINALLY
Oh my god that was the most relevant empty netter off all time!!!
And damn a WORLD was lifted off my shoulders!!!!

12:49 PM: Radek Dvorak re-ups in Florida.  Two years, $3.4 million. n Ohlund’s deal is indeed frontloaded, Darren Dreger tweets that Mattias will take home $22.5 million of the $24.5 million in the first five years of the deal.  Speaking of tweets, why not follow us?  @2MAblog

12:27 PM: Ohlund terms disclosed:  SEVEN YEARS, $3.75 million per.  Gotta be frontloaded.  Just has to be.

12:15 PM: First signing!  Perennial Devils trade rumor Mattias Ohlund has signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Terms yet to be disclosed.

12:03 PM: No free agents have signed yet.  What’s taking them so long?!  Jerks.

12:00 PM: Let the festivities commence!  The floodgates, they are being opened.

Oh, offseason.

I had a dream last night that the Devils won the Stanley Cup.

Rushing to the computer, in dream form of course, I logged onto 2MA to spill my heart out in sheer jubilation. My team won the Cup, finally.

Of course, my password wouldn’t work and the “publish entry” button mysteriously disappeared so I couldn’t even applaud my team’s brilliant seven-game effort against the Quebec Nordiques.

And then Martin Brodeur turned into Denzel Washington and the rodeo clowns all sang Killing Me Softly as the Puerto Rican Day parade carried on.

I love dreams.

The Day After

It’s been said over and again, by Scott last night, by comments both here and elsewhere, by talking heads on TV.  Last night, simply, was amazing.

I sat down to try to put something up on this blog before heading back to my much-less-thrilling day job, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to say.  I’m 60 words into this thing and I still don’t know, really.

I do know that last night’s game re-affirmed my love for this game, for this team, for that goaltender, for this franchise.  I’ve never been to a Stanley Cup Final game – I can only imagine that the atmosphere in the Rock last night was as close as it gets without Lord Stanley’s mug riding on the outcome of the game.

I love that this game fell on St. Patrick’s Day.  There was a nice, loose atmosphere to the crowd – whether it was the history-in-the-making aspect, the beer flowing pre-and-during game, or (most likely) a healthy combination of both, it made the Rock truly feel like home for perhaps the first time.  Sure, there was the stray Blackhawks fan (and the obligitory guy in a Rangers jersey despite their team actually playing a pretty important game at the same time), but last night, the Prudential Center was the DEVILS building.  That is what it should have felt like during last year’s playoffs, and hopefully will feel like this year.

I love that Patrik Elias’ record-setting assist was a primary assist, and that everyone in the building saw the play and recognized it for what it was instantly.  The eruption for Patty’s assist was worth the price of admission alone, regardless of Marty’s feat.  I love that the response to Patty’s record-breaking point was so intense and so overwhelming that I actually had to look up who scored the goal just now, because for the life of me, I couldn’t remember.  It was Brian Gionta, by the way, and it was shorthanded.

I love that there was no scripted cheesy celebration after the game, that Gary Bettman didn’t hit the ice to shake Marty’s hand and present him with a plaque.  There will be time for that before another game, but the celebration last night was rightfully focused on Brodeur.  As awkward as it became after a few minutes, I love that he was given scissors and cut down the net.  I love that the rest of the team jumped in to help out so Marty could take his victory lap.  Without his team, he wouldn’t have won one game, let alone 552, and without his team, he would still be cutting that net down this morning.

I love that we had the greatest play-by-play man in all of hockey (and arguably all of sports) in house to call the historic game, just as we have the greatest play-by-play man in all of hockey to call every game, historic or mundane.  Doc Emrick, as we’ve stated many times on this blog, is one of the greatest perks to being a Devils fan.  We’re lucky to have him.

We’re a lucky fan base in general, I think it’s safe to say.  We’ve got the greatest goalie of all time.  We’ve got the greatest point-scorer in Devils history on the ice right now.  We’ve got the greatest announcer.  We’ve got three Stanley Cups, four Eastern Conference championships, seven Atlantic Division championships, sixteen consecutive winning seasons, eleven consecutive playoff appearances.  A good number of those will likely go up by the time this season’s over.

We’ve also got among the greatest fans in hockey.  Let’s face it, it’s not always easy to be a Devils fan.  We’re too quiet.  We can’t fill our building most nights.  We’ve got a preoccupation with the team on the other side of the Hudson.  We’ve heard all of that before and undoubtly will continue to hear it for a long time.

But last night – last night I was proud of our fan base.  Proud of our franchise.  Proud of our owner, GM, coach, team, game-day crew, ushers, building, city, state.  Last night was one of the greatest nights I have ever experienced as a Devils fan.  A night I will never forget.  Thank you, Mr. Brodeur.  Thank you, Mr. Elias.  Thank you, Mr. Lamoriello, Mr. Vanderbeek, Mr. Sutter.  Thank you, Mr. Langenbrunner, Mr. Clemmensen, Mr. Weekes, Mr. Martin, Mr. Parise, Mr. Zubrus, everyone who’s ever skated with a Devils crest on their chest.  Thank you to everyone involved in getting that building where it is, to the people who make the games happen every night.

Thank you to those who read what we have to say on this site, whether you like us or…not so much.  Thank you, Devils fans.  Last night was special, because of all of us.  Hopefully, this is not the last time that building feels like it did last night.

…not bad for not knowing what I wanted to say, eh?

Thoughts from Section 209…Devils/Caps.. 2/3/2009

Well it was due to happen one of these nights… 8 in a row is pretty good, and you can’t win them ALL right? So as annoyed as you can be about the effort and the game… and the goaltending was… not so good… but we’ll get to that as we get going here….

the non-hockey:
— OK, we know it was dumb and he’s not a hall of fame player, but hey he was a relevant piece of the 1994 debacle…but really.. if you’re a Ranger Fan WHY ARE YOU IN THE ARENA TONIGHT??? WHY WHY WHY?? You should be paying your $1500 a seat, to see Mark Messier speak for 3 hours, Christopher Reeve brought back from the dead (was that offensive?? GOOD!!), the Stanley Cup skated around for the millionth time… and now even the 1994 Cup footage is COLORIZED!! (for you young folk back in the early days of TV, it was broadcast in black and white and this is a way of saying it’s OLD)
… but fear not Ranger Fans… DOUG LIDSTER NIGHT IS COMING!!!
— Speaking of disgraceful acts so as I was sitting there watching warm-ups.. a puck in got caught in the nets on a dump-in…so it sits there for like 5-10 minutes (ok evil Scott was waiting for a body check in warm-ups to drop the puck on the guy’s head)… and all of a sudden this dude runs down the section.. jumps on the seats… practically uses the guy’s son as a stepstool grabs the puck and runs the hell back up the steps… for what?? A WARMUP PUCK?? The dam thing don’t even have a LOGO on it…way to go 45-year old virgin.. more rubber you’ll never use elsewhere!!!!
— I also gotta add the 209 wisecrack of the night too… the guy behind me is the standard “mister makes the bad jokes guy” that you feed off of and re-crack his jokes to save them… and he had a gem last night… the Caps get pp#2 and he decides to yell at the Caps fan in the Redskin jersey… talk about confused…the dude with no shirt and THE GREAT 8 in marker on his back (I mean we like Zubrus and all but CMONNNNNN)… so he yells out
“HOW DO YOU LIKE OUR STIMULUS PACKAGE”
she raises her middle finger and points it at him
I just go back “GUESS YOU’RE NOT GETTING STIMULATED ENOUGH”
she did not move or gesture all game after :p

the Good:
— OK, who else got the feeling when we scored and made it 3-1, that it was “here we go again”….
— Alex Ovechkin was pretty much quiet all game… that’s a good sign and reminder of Devils teams of old… shut down the big name…and alot of this of all people goes to Mike Mottau
— Jamie Langenbrunner… only ONE goal.. TRADE HIM NOW!!!!!!
HE’S COOLING OFF OH NOOOOO!!!!

the Bad:
— this team was DEAD and lifeless in the first period… but again you can’t give 110%, 100% of the time no matter what the NHL Network commercial says :p
— the goaltending… MY GOD… 3 of 4 goals were stoppable and two were BAD… and for God’s sake… can ya play Weekes more then ONCE A MONTH PLEASE??? Shane Falco needed a night off!! I know Feb 26 is coming and the other guy’s gonna come in and as long as he stops 50% of his shots he’ll be in net… but STILL… UNLEASH THE WEEKES!!!!

— there’s not really a whole lot to say here that wasn’t hit up in the damn live-cap aside from game rantings and stuff, and if you can get really really angry about a team winning 8 of it’s last 9… it’s time for therapy… and decaf… yeah lots of decaf!!!!!!
