Canada vs Team AMERICA (puta si!)… thoughts soon-to-be from Sun Tavern: Roselle Park, N

I’ve been toying and messing with the ideas of how to change things up in the post-game write-ups since I think we’ll all admit it’s gotten a bit stale… and honestly with no one else LEFT here writing (it’s no fault of mine as much as anyone wants to believe it).. and I’m gonna try to mix it up some and keep things fresh… also one of the other things I wanted to put out there… an open casting call to be a special “Guest Host” (stealing the idea from Raw) for Devils ROAD games… add some more coverage here… you don’t need to follow a style or a format, you don’t need to worry about pissing me off (the whole idea we follow hockey and read about it is we ALL love and enjoy it after all)…. and I do want to get some OTHER voices on here but MINE…. I went way way OCD in the pre-lockout days with the old CRASHER Line days…. and I don’t want that and I want to have a life OUTSIDE of this stuff…. though I’ve been kinda left with the keys to car… I don’t mind someone else driving and adding to the site when things allow….. so all that aside…. this is clearly the biggest non-medal game of the tournament…. so might as well have some fun with it at the bar and with friends (hell it’s 2 hours from now… CMON DOWN if you can!)

I have no idea how I will be covering this game… or what I will be writing… I’m really just making this damn thing up as I go right here… so please please do chirp in and get involved!!!

  • What’s on the line tonight??
  • The US comes in at 2-0 and with a win tonight they take a top seed in the medal round, and I think only behind Finland over all as the best team in the Prelims, which will give them a nice patsy in the first medal round game they play in… and even with a respectable loss (more so if it goes to Overtime) the Americans will have an excellent shot at the “bonus bye” for the 4th best team in the pools…

Canada comes in with two not-so-good efforts in their opening games and an inexcusable shootout game against the Swiss who they are WORLDS better then (though Hiller did play out of his skull)… the shootout and the 2 points for the win (you see that NHL… PENALIZE a team for going to the Skills competition dammit!)….and if Canada doesn’t win regulation (depends on the score)…. they may have to play into the event which would be a DISASTER for a team that was supposed to DOMINATE here and not squeak in…. and all the pressure on the world is on them now!

      First Period

    — So far the best thing about watching the game at the bar…. JR and Milbury on MUTE… and the damn car race ended in time so all the NASCAR heads are leaving!
    — Speaking of bad TV Coverage I could totally go into the disgrace job that NBC is doing with these Olympics but I am trying to be a lil kinder/gentler here and enjoying the ride… least the games today didn’t get stuffed in the corner for more curling…..
    — Also damn, those USA jerseys look WAY too Ranger-Like… I get the 1980 Tribute and all… but booooo!! The Blue ones not so much….

    — SCAWWWWRR!!!

Langenbrunner tips the Rafalski shot pass and it’s … one… NOTHING… NEW… errr.. USA!!!
Correction… Tip by CROSBY… score unchanged!!

    — Crosby stuffed on the breakaway… MORE pouting ensues!!!!
    — Getzlaf to the box for a cross check to the skull… ouch!!!
    — USA has all sorts of jump and pressing like hell on Canada…. they’re feeling the pressure….San Jose fans, this look familiar to ya’s? 🙂

    — Well Canada ties it up but still looks kinda crappy, but still a NICE tip by Staal (damn that name) on a Seabrook long shot….

    — And speaking of Staal…. mb30 lets ANOTHER Rafalski wrister far side with Langs giving the ol’mb30 stink face!!!!!!
    — 2 goals on 4 shots for the Americans…. wow… that’s the mb30 we got used to in the clutch :p
    — What a hell of a first period for the US team….and judging by TSN on Facebook, the world is mutiny-ing against ol’mb30 here….

      Second Period

    — How awesome would an Olympic hockey fight be, eh??
    — And right as I was about to say how GOOD Miller’s been….

Teows behind the net… comes to the front… shot… save Miller… juicy rebound and Heatley stuffs it home (and insert bad driving jokes here about Hot Rod Heatley)….2-2 game, blame Canada!

    — good Lord Donald Sutherland looked like cold hard brutal death there didn’t he???
    — mb30 ANOTHER one off the mask… THIS IS THE HOCKEY GODS TELLING YOU SOMETHING!!!
    — Hot damn the game intensity is getting AWESOME….STAAL TURNS HEEL AND TAKES OUT PERRY!!! He’s gonna win the Royal Rumble!!!!
    — did ya ever think you’d cheer THIS???

Bobby Ryan the shot… save…..Backus the next shot… is blocked…rebound comes loose… HELLO CHRIS DRURY and he stuffs it past mb30 for an all-too familair sight eh??? Just this one was kinda nicer to see… 3-2 US… FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    — WELCOME TO THE OLYMPIC BREAKAWAY COMPETITION!!!!! Kane, then Thornton…. then BOBBY RYAN!! Oh what a SAVE FEST!!!!!
    — attaboy Rafaslki….get that back elbow in when Staal tries to ride you like an awful country music song!
    — This game has been all the intensity and fire I was hoping for… ANYONE who’s anti-Pros in the Olympics needs this game as proof!!!

      Third Period

    — Cindy to the box, someone get the diapers and a bottle!!
    — Best thing about being in a half-full bar like this… the Olympics are on and the ice dancing is on… NOT ONE FUCKING PERSON IS WATCHING THE ICE DANCING… suck it NBC!!!!
    — Damn if the US scored on that delayed call, would the broken stick have gotten an assist??? US back on the power play!
    — and Rafalski 3:16 says…..

I JUST LIT UP YOUR ASS!!!!! Puck to the point….Parise and Langs in front… looks like Captain AMERICA is right there to be AMERICAN PAIN IN THE ASS TIPPING IT HOME!!!

    — And then Ryan Miller is just CLUTCH CLUTCH CLUTCH… SUCK ON MY STICK SAVE CINDY!!!!!!!!!!! And a nice flop and spin-a-roonie… SUCKA!!
    — So ya think with each goal the smile on Luongo’s face gets better??? (as I say this MBxxx makes a HUGE stick save)
    — Canadians on a HUGE pp… missed on who… sorry
    — ok, so we did the KILL KILL KILL chant in the bar… even Andy was involved… he got a kick being on the other side of it 🙂
    — seeing Joe Thornton with the puck makes me think the Canadians have more chokers on the roster then the Benoit family did ……
    — and HOLY SHIT RYAN MILLER MAKES ME REGRET MY BEER CHOICE OF SAM ADAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Least it’s an American beer.. screw your Molsons!!!! (only for tonight :p)
    — but just when you think the game is over…..

Nash from the corner… sees Cindy in front… the old no-touch rule is in effect…. Cindy taps it home and gets it through the pads of Miller…. well it’s gonna be a FUN finish eh???

    — NIEDERMAYER OFF THE OUTSIDE POST!!!! 3:00 of a hockey game to kill!!!
    — Jesus TWO STRAIGHT MINUTES OF BLITZ BUT MILLER AND THE AMERICANS HOLD ON FOR DEAR LIFE!!!
    (30 years later, Miracle 2.0??)
    — Why did Wilson NOT call tiem out there???
    …maybe cause of this!!

Kesler jumps OVER THE CANADIAN PLAYER and taps it into the empty net… the goal was so ridiculous and crazy, Parise gets the back door assist!!!

    — Deportations, riots and mb30 sent to the American team out of SPITE soon to ensue!!
    — CMON LET EM FIGHT!! SCREW THE IOC RULES!!

    Shanny Re-Ups

I have been a terribly lazy blogger this summer. And for that, I’m…well, not that sorry. But sorry nonetheless.

But something has dragged me out of the blogger doldrums. Mr. Gulitti on his Fire & Ice blog reports (at 5:30 AM, no less – hardcore, TG, hardcore!) that the Devils and Brendan Shanahan have agreed to a one0year deal and that Shanny will be in training camp when it opens in September.

Why is this awesome? Well, because I bought a $30 Brendan Shanahan St. Patrick’s Day tee-shirt last year and I want it to be relevant for more than two months.

But more importantly, it gives the Devils a little veteran leadership on the bottom lines, a guy who can play left or right wing (probably right), and a PP/PK specialist. I don’t know what the Devils are planning, but I could totally live with Shanny on special teams and the 4th line. Absolutely could live with that.

The drawbacks? Well, he IS kind of old. Will he break down? I guess that depends on how Mr. Lemaire chooses to use Shanny. Again, my vote here is 4th line and PP/PK specialist. But I guess we shall see. I like the signing though. I like it quite a bit.

    —————————–

Also, I suppose I owe everyone the ZubbieCounterContest voting, eh? Well, the Zubbies (as named by 2MA reader Kevin B. has dubbed them) will be coming before the season starts. Probably late August (I know, I know I said May/June. I lied. Sorry.)

3:08 PM: Scott Niedermeyer re-ups with Anaheim, one year, $6 million + bonuses.  Drats.

3:05 PM: TG says that both Gionta and Shanahan are fielding offers.  Guess no one cares about poor John Madden.

2:12 PM: 12 years, $62 million for Hossa from Chicago.  Hot diggity the ‘Hawks better hope he’s healthy and not cursed.

2:11 PM: Conkblock himself, Ty Conklin has signed with the Blues, two years, $1.3 million.  Prepare yourselves for an outdoor game, St. Louis.  Ty likes those games.

2:05 PM: Matt Walker to Tampa Bay, four years/$1.7 million per according to TSN.

2:01 PM: Darren Dreger reports that the Lightning were in the running for Hossa too.  Which just proves that yes, the Lightning really were given cap immunity.

1:56 PM: Craig Anderson, goalie extraordinaire, to Colorado for two years, financial terms undisclosed.

1:47 PM: A big name!  Finally!  TSN is currently reporting that Marian Hossa will make it to the Stanley Cup Final and lose with the Chicago Blackhawks this year!  Terms undisclosed.  Also, David Booth re-signs with Florida for 6 years/$25.5 million.

1:46 PM: Pavel Kubina rumored to be being traded to Atlanta.

1:45 PM: Pierre LeBrun of ESPN says otherwise on the officialness of the Kovalev deal.  So, it’s still rumored.

1:40 PM: Kovalev deal is now official (or not…), he re-ups with Montreal for 2 years, $8.75 million.  Greene’s a two-year deal, still waiting on the dolla dollas.

1:32 PM: It’s a very slow go of it so far.  Only three signings in the first hour and a half.  If I recall correctly, it picked up between 2 and 3PM last year.

1:18 PM: Kovalev re-signing with Montreal is still just a rumor.  Deal has yet to be signed, according to TSN.

1:13 PM: Tough guy Colton Orr has inked a four-year, $4-million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1:07 PM: Okay Devils fans, we can all breathe easy.  The official Devils Twitter feed reports that the Devils have re-signed Andy Greene.  Thank God that’s taken care of.  Since it’s the Devils, terms are, naturally, undisclosed.

12:59 PM: Rumors flying that Alex Kovalev has re-signed with Les Habs for 2 years and about $8.8 million.  Not confirmed yet, though.

12:49 PM: Radek Dvorak re-ups in Florida.  Two years, $3.4 million. n Ohlund’s deal is indeed frontloaded, Darren Dreger tweets that Mattias will take home $22.5 million of the $24.5 million in the first five years of the deal.  Speaking of tweets, why not follow us?  @2MAblog

12:27 PM: Ohlund terms disclosed:  SEVEN YEARS, $3.75 million per.  Gotta be frontloaded.  Just has to be.

12:15 PM: First signing!  Perennial Devils trade rumor Mattias Ohlund has signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Terms yet to be disclosed.

12:03 PM: No free agents have signed yet.  What’s taking them so long?!  Jerks.

12:00 PM: Let the festivities commence!  The floodgates, they are being opened.

    Thoughts from Section 209…Devils/Caps.. 2/3/2009

Well it was due to happen one of these nights… 8 in a row is pretty good, and you can’t win them ALL right? So as annoyed as you can be about the effort and the game… and the goaltending was… not so good… but we’ll get to that as we get going here….

    the non-hockey:
    — OK, we know it was dumb and he’s not a hall of fame player, but hey he was a relevant piece of the 1994 debacle…but really.. if you’re a Ranger Fan WHY ARE YOU IN THE ARENA TONIGHT??? WHY WHY WHY?? You should be paying your $1500 a seat, to see Mark Messier speak for 3 hours, Christopher Reeve brought back from the dead (was that offensive?? GOOD!!), the Stanley Cup skated around for the millionth time… and now even the 1994 Cup footage is COLORIZED!! (for you young folk back in the early days of TV, it was broadcast in black and white and this is a way of saying it’s OLD)
… but fear not Ranger Fans… DOUG LIDSTER NIGHT IS COMING!!!
    — Speaking of disgraceful acts so as I was sitting there watching warm-ups.. a puck in got caught in the nets on a dump-in…so it sits there for like 5-10 minutes (ok evil Scott was waiting for a body check in warm-ups to drop the puck on the guy’s head)… and all of a sudden this dude runs down the section.. jumps on the seats… practically uses the guy’s son as a stepstool grabs the puck and runs the hell back up the steps… for what?? A WARMUP PUCK?? The dam thing don’t even have a LOGO on it…way to go 45-year old virgin.. more rubber you’ll never use elsewhere!!!!
    — I also gotta add the 209 wisecrack of the night too… the guy behind me is the standard “mister makes the bad jokes guy” that you feed off of and re-crack his jokes to save them… and he had a gem last night… the Caps get pp#2 and he decides to yell at the Caps fan in the Redskin jersey… talk about confused…the dude with no shirt and THE GREAT 8 in marker on his back (I mean we like Zubrus and all but CMONNNNNN)… so he yells out
“HOW DO YOU LIKE OUR STIMULUS PACKAGE”
she raises her middle finger and points it at him
I just go back “GUESS YOU’RE NOT GETTING STIMULATED ENOUGH”
she did not move or gesture all game after :p

    the Good:
    — OK, who else got the feeling when we scored and made it 3-1, that it was “here we go again”….
    — Alex Ovechkin was pretty much quiet all game… that’s a good sign and reminder of Devils teams of old… shut down the big name…and alot of this of all people goes to Mike Mottau
    — Jamie Langenbrunner… only ONE goal.. TRADE HIM NOW!!!!!!
    HE’S COOLING OFF OH NOOOOO!!!!

    the Bad:
    — this team was DEAD and lifeless in the first period… but again you can’t give 110%, 100% of the time no matter what the NHL Network commercial says :p
    — the goaltending… MY GOD… 3 of 4 goals were stoppable and two were BAD… and for God’s sake… can ya play Weekes more then ONCE A MONTH PLEASE??? Shane Falco needed a night off!! I know Feb 26 is coming and the other guy’s gonna come in and as long as he stops 50% of his shots he’ll be in net… but STILL… UNLEASH THE WEEKES!!!!

    — there’s not really a whole lot to say here that wasn’t hit up in the damn live-cap aside from game rantings and stuff, and if you can get really really angry about a team winning 8 of it’s last 9… it’s time for therapy… and decaf… yeah lots of decaf!!!!!!

    Listening & Working

I’d like to thank everyone who dropped by and hung around for the Live-Cap of the Devils/Rangers game a few nights ago.  As you may have noticed, we’re toying with something new as far as the structure of our Live-Cap is concerned.

Frankly, the maiden voyage has generated some mixed reviews.  It mainly breaks down like this:

    But on a serious note…

    – Those of you that attended and interacted in the Live-Cap had fun with it and seem to be giving it a thumbs up.

    – Readers who checked it out after everything was wrapped up (I happen to fall into this category) are generating the more negative responses.

There are also plenty of readers I’ve spoken to that need to see some more of it before they can form an opinion.

This being the case, I wanted to let all of our readers & fans know that we truly appreciate your feedback on the matter and we assure you that we are listening to your advice and we will be trying different approaches, set-ups, and structures for our Live-Caps for the remainder of the pre-season.  We would love it if as many of you as possible could get involved and be a part of the process.

More or less, we’d like to use the comment-thread for this post as a braindump for you and ourselves to share ideas and explore some possible improvements.  So get to typing!!

I’d also like to point out that there is not necessarily a definite change taking place to the Live-Cap structure.  It’s very possible that we could end up using the original format, thus wasting our time after all. 😉  Hey, change isn’t always a bad thing.  Just ask Larry Robinson.

Thanks again for getting involved, 2MA loves you!
