Devils Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

There's a big game taking place Thursday night at the Rock in Newark.

The Devils against the Islanders.

No. 29 in the NHL standings against No. 30.

This is big.

The Devils lost again Tuesday night, in Washington, and remained two points ahead of the Isles for that 29th spot. The Islanders, however, have three games in hand and could move into a tie for 29th with a home upset of the Lightning on Wednesday night.

Regardless, No. 29 will be on the line when these two New York-area rivals get together in the opener of the Devils' four-game homestand.

The Devils' latest losing streak has reached three games, during which they have scored three goals and allowed 15.

Kovalchuk scores 2, Brodeur and Devils top Coyotes (AP)

Ilya Kovalchuk sensed something different about the New Jersey Devils before they faced the Phoenix Coyotes. It suddenly didn't matter that they had dropped five straight and six of seven. Ilya Kovalchuk snapped out of a five-game drought by scoring two goals, his first multiple goal game of the season, and carried the Devils to a 3-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday night.

Game Night

I’m so buried under schoolwork right now that I don’t even know who the Devils are playing tonight.

The Capitals?  Schmeh.  No Ovechkin, you say?  AWESOME.

If we’re gonna win a home game this year, an Ovechkin-less Capitals is a good way to try.  No, I don’t count the Carolina game because they suck and we still only barely won.  The Capitals sans Ovi are still pretty damn good, but beatable.

I, of course, won’t be watching this game.  Suggestion to the NHL:  Release your schedule before I have to register for classes.  I’m in school very late on Wednesday nights, and of course, the Devils play just about every Wednesday night.  Mostly at home, too.  That is weak sauce.

I know that this post is mostly saying nothing.  That’s because I’m a little distracted, as you may have noticed.  I apologize.  I mostly just wanted to say that those of you who submitted ZubbieCounters for his most recent goal are AMAZING, and I will be posting more than one of them tomorrow sometime.  That’s how good they are.

Look for a Mackie recap later today or early tomorrow.  And maybe something of substance from me in the next few days too.  Better than this pathetic attempt at a preview, anyway.
