Welp sports fans, get a good look at Scott Gomez in a New Jersey Devils sweater while ya can, because, well, he sure ain’t going to be a Diablo much longer.
…as if that wasn’t already an obvious statement…
Because Pavel Datsyuk had to go and be a poo-face and sign a seven-year contract extention with the Detroit Red Wings, believed to be between $6 and 7 million a season, Gomez will surely follow suit in the summer and command similiar numbers when he hits the jackpot that is free agency.
Alas, while the Ruskie with the unusually large head has much more of an offensive upside than Gomez, er, at least in the regular season, Pavel’s deal easily will be looked at and compared heavily when Scotty enters unrestricted free agency with Daddy Carlos sure to be close by, holding his hand in the process.
Granted, I don’t want Scott Gomez anywhere near the New Jersey Devils next season, but come on, this is just a bit too much to handle. I simply cannot live in a world where Scott Gomez shall command at least $6 million a season. Might as well throw Mike Rupp an extra four mill for good measure, eh?
Sigh.

I really have not taking a liking to Gomez this year because of his performance:salary ratio, but the cold hard truth is that no one, and I mean NO ONE can bring the puck through the zone the way he does. I’m not defending him in any sense of the matter, but losing him next year would be a significant blow to the Devils unless comparable compensation is acquired.
Gonna be one long summer, but hopefully not before a long spring

That’s why they should sign me. Have you seen my puckhandling skills?
They’re to die for.

I’ll miss Gomez. I still am holding onto that .01% hope like I did with Niedermayer. ::sigh::

Well, we all heard his parents the one game. They sounded so “excited” when they talked about his future with the organization.
On a side note:
- The cap is suppose to move up next year
- “LTI’s” will all be gone next year so more cap room
- Marty took less money for his contract AND he’s having the BEST year of his career. That equals more bonuses!
- Marty= ROLE MODEL
Gomez will look like a complete ASS if he leaves for more money. His numbers aren’t that spectacular, even when the Devs were healthy. If it’s not for more money, it might be because he wants to be closer to home, aka Niedermayer-itis. If Marty’s influence doesn’t light a fire under Gomez, it might be bye bye Gomer.
How about a break down on who the Devs might sign in the offseason within the organization? Anyone think the Devs might go after someone (especially on D)?

Gomez has gotten really cocky to me. Have you heard his last few interviews?
Stan: “Do you think Marty is having the best season of his career?”
Gomez” I don’t know, I score on him all the time in practice.”
Stan: “You were scratched last game, do you feel ready to play?”
Gomez: “I was injured not scratched. What was the question?”
A friend of mine said he was just trying to be funny, but it doesn’t come off that way to me. Since he is from Alaska, I do expect him to move Northwestern. I’m sure out of the 5 teams in that division, there wil be at least one team that will overpay for a concieted center who’s afraid to shoot the puck.
His numbers this year will not do him the same favor they did last year at arbitration though. If he wants somebody to show him the money, he really needs to step it up in the playoffs. Which I guess, might be a good thing for us.

What’s with all the Gomer bashing? He’s an amazing puck handler, consistantly is tops in the league in assists, but yet everybody here hates him? What gives? Gomer is taking home $5 mil this year. Yes its a lot, but Lou has his ways in getting talent for a great price. He made some mistakes with paying certain players too much, but after this year, that should be good. I hope Gomer stays. He can go to a western conference team and hope he gets to the playoffs each year. Or stay with the Devils, play for a great time, that will be in the playoffs each year.

NJDevil,
It’s true — he really IS an amazing puck handler, but tell me, is that all there is to playing a great game in the NHL?
Not in the least.
He HAS the skills, but he’s proven to be quite lazy at times, and worse yet, refuses to play any sort of defensive game. While you can get away with that on some teams, this organization won’t stand for something like that.
He’s not worth $5 mill, in a perfect world I’d give him $3.8-4 tops, but it’ll never happen. I’d rather that money be spent on a player who is more complete than Scott Gomez.
