There’s a reason why Elias wasn’t photoed with the captain’s C yesterday. It’s ‘cuz, well, he ain’t the cappy no mo’.
At least, for now.
As it stands, little ol’ C is up for grabs, or so says brand spanking new head coach Brent Sutter. Patty may or may not retain the C, but I’m thinking there’s another guy waiting in the wings who deserves a piece of the ABC pie.
And no, his name is not Colin White.
Alas, Sutter and his coaching staff and Louie Lams are set to go through a “process” (sounds fun) to determine who shall don the C, along with the alternates as well.
They should totally hold a hot dog eating contest.
Chico for Captain?
NOTES: Former first rounder Adrian Foster is taking a second crack at making it to the NHL — this time, with the Minnesota Wild. The oft-injured Foster was invited by the Wild to training camp on a tryout basis. Good luck Adrian!
DARREN SAYS: John Madden would be a solid choice but I only see him staying in New Jersey for the next two seasons, unless the Devils are looking for a 36 year old checking center with a ridiculous paycheck. Colin White is the only defenseman on the roster that would even be considered but no captain should take that many stupid penalties. Travis Zajac and Zach Parise are the captains of the future but aren’t ready yet. The only obvious choice can’t wear the C because he plays between the pipes.
My vote is for Brian Gionta because he goes out on the ice every single night to try and prove his critics wrong.

Here’s my take on this:
Elias signed a 7 year deal under market value with a no movement cause. Theoretically, he shouldn’t be going anywhere and certainly has drank the Kool Aid enough where he didn’t want to leave. Although his leadership skills last year may be a little suspect, his return in 2005-6 fueled the team enough where they went on “The Streak” and stole the division from both Philly and the Rangers. The team still had over 100 points last year under his guise. Give him some time to grow into the role, because he’s here for at least six more. I can’t help that stripping him of the captaincy for the sake of a new regime planting their feet can be more counter productive then not. Look at Dallas last year with Modano and Morrow….
September 14th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
I’m the new captain.
But seriously. If they do give it to someone else, I think it’ll be Madden.
September 14th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
How in the hell could they strip it from Patty? They had 100+ points last year. Maybe he isn’t a locker room leader, IE: Stevens, but he can certainly put up points. Taking this away from him could be a little slap to his face, considering he took less cash long term to be here. I think Patty will keep the C. The pic was just a misprint.
Better question is who would they give it to?
Madden? I don’t think so. I love his intensity, but since he signed the long term deal his output has decreased, and I believe he’s lost a little something.
Pando? A good assistant, not a captain.
Marty? I don’t think there’s ever been a goalie captain. Although, placing a C on the best goaltender of all time can be done in this case.
White? No freakin way. I think Colin should be traded.
Jamie? Same with Pando, good assistant, not a captain.
Rest of team? No way.

NJDevil, goalies are not allowed to wear the Captain’s C.

A) Sutter’s playing mind games with Elias to get that spark back into his game.
B) Adrian Foster will go down as one of the few blemishes on Lou’s draft history. 1st round in 2001. Lou goes to the registry table and they can’t even find this guy’s name. Finally they have that figured out, but they can’t find the guy in the building. He was a solid 2nd or 3rd round pick and Lou jumped early. The only reason why this wasn’t a total waste was that the 2nd and 3rd rounds didn’t really produce too many NHL players.
September 14th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
One of the “few blemishes” ? — From 1997-2001 there were far too many blemishes with the No. 1 and No. 2 picks alone. J.F. Damphousse no. 1 and Stan Gron no. 2 in 1997? Ari Ahonen no. 1 in 1999? David Hale and Teemu Laine no. 1 & 2 in 2000? Foster and Igor Pohanka no. 1 & 2 in 2001? Anton Kadeykin in the 2nd round of 2002? Conte/Lamiorello were swinging and missing consistently, and Hockey’s Future recently rated their 2000 and 2001 drafts as busts. Thank goodness they’ve made great pickups via undrafted free agents — without them they were done! Foster was, unfortunately, one of many misses in that period.

It’s not a misprint, Suttter said that He is not the C for now but He may or may not get it back, if He does it will be decided between Him and the Ass’t coaches, poor Patty, that may throw Him off of His game, or it may light a fire under his butt. The season has not even started yet and there is already drama, I can’t wait for Oct to start, I hope that Langenbrunner’s groin problem will not keep Him out for very long.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Hell! If a General Manager can be the coach for a couple of seasons, I nominate Louie as the Captain. Don’t worry Redshirts, they ‘aint making Gomez a letter and Drury took 19.
The Dark Ranger

Rich Chere of the Ledger was speculating the Langenbrunner would be the favorite for the C if Elias doesn’t get it back. That wouldn’t be bad. Maybe Sutter is just trying to show the boys that he’s in charge, unlike Julien last year, who appeared to the guys to just be a puppet for Lou. I wouldn’t be surprised either way of whether Patty keeps the C.
Agree on Foster, but I remember in his draft year, several scouts had rated Foster even higher than Heatley in DL’s last year of Jr’s, but then Foster started coming down with all of his injuries, which ruined his career.

Everyone is the low man on the totem pole. It doesn’t matter to Sutter who was captain in the previous season(s). It’s a new season and a new era with Sutter behind the bench (if he makes it through the year without gettin fired/stepping down
).
I’m sure there are plenty of guys who are capable of carrying this team. As long as they’re happy with the choice, I’ll be happy. Let’s just get the season under way already!!!! This is pure torture!
September 15th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Sutter is going to do things His way for a while and if all goes well then Lou might actually let Him do His thing, should be an interesting season that’s for sure, and of course My Plasma tv is acting up just in time for the Season to start. I hope that Jamie does not need Groin surgery, that is the last thing that this Team needs right now, but maybe it’s better to get in done early to be fresh for the playoffs.
September 16th, 2007 at 7:28 am
Well, I met everybody at training camp (and got autographs ^^ Everyone was so nice! …Except Matvichuk who completely ignored us >_
September 16th, 2007 at 7:33 am
when I talked to Patty he said they “stripped him down” But he said he was joking(not funny Patty)…apparently not. I think Patty was a great captain but if not him, John Madden and Brian Gionta are good choices. I would also say Jamie Langenbrunner (he actually saved me from being crushed by a gate where the players’ cars go out! My hero! For real!) only he’s a little on the shy side(even when I talked to him.) and I’ve seen enough Jamie interviews to know he is not a big fan of the camera. But I think he can pull it off.
…not to mention he wasn’t in training camp because of a groin injury!!!
Feel better Jamie! (I can’t stand it when my favorite player is hurt!)
He said he should be “ok” in a couple of days. Dont you kid me too, Jamie!
By the way Brent has been working our boys real hard, and let me tell you, NOBODY is going to push us around this year. NO ONE!
September 16th, 2007 at 11:58 am
Good ILoveJamie15… let’s hope he keeps his word. He’s the greatest.
Wanna get me a Cam autograph?? HAHA!
September 16th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Yeah, Jamie is the greatest. I told him how awesome he was for that double overtime goal he scored last year and he just chuckled. Modest as ever, at least he’s still the same Jamie we Devils fans all love.
Cam had a huge stack of cards that he signs and gives to people, and me and my best friend (who loves Cam as much as I love Jamie) were lucky enough to have him sign one for each of us! Cam was the most “chill” out of everybody, he even remembered us the next day! I feel so honored! I missed Jamie the second time around..
poor guy has nothing to do when everybody else goes to practice…
By the way, I hear Scott Niedermayer was suspended…Well that’s what he gets for skipping training camp because “I don’t know if I should retire or not” I mean, come on, that’s no excuse! Look at Jamie, he can’t play at all and HE went to training camp! Geez.
September 16th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
I was thinking…
1st line: Zubrus, Elias, Gionta (lol, ZEG!)
2nd line: Parise, Zajac, Langenbrunner (good ol’ ZZpop/tenacious Z never let us down!)
3rd line: Clarkson/Pandolfo, Madden, Brylin (it could work…)
4th line: Asham, Rupp, Janssen (probably not going to happen)
and of course, we can’t forget Rod Pelley. Perhaps a fill-in for the 4th line?
September 16th, 2007 at 4:52 pm
Just hearing all of this training camp talk, I really really can’t wait for the Season to start, I hope that Jamie will be better in a few ays and it’s just soreness and not much more then that, Cam seems like a really nice Guy and I hope that He gets some ice time this season. How did Grant Marshall look at camp?
September 16th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
Asham-Rupp-Janssen would instantly be my favorite Devils line ever. Saying that, I have to say I hope it doesn’t come to fruition because there’s not much going on there outside of pummelling the hell out of the other guys, and we could really use some balance on that line.
But doesn’t Asham-Rupp-Janssen just kind of roll of the tongue? It’s got a poetic feel to it, kind of a Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance sport lyrical quality…
September 16th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
I just bought NHL2K8 a couple of days ago and the default 4th line is Janssen-Rupp-Clarkson. Now if you will excuse me, I’m going back to playing it now and pretend I did not just read that news about Langer.
September 17th, 2007 at 7:40 am
Brylin for C. Nobody works harder.
September 17th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
The more I read about Jamie the less I’m liking it, if He needs surgery He will be out at least 6 to 8 weeks. How much will that bite?
September 17th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Anyone doin a recap of the game for those who work late and can’t listen on the radio?
September 17th, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Kelly –
Livecaps will start once the season starts. We’ll try our best to keep y’all as up to date as possible in the meantime though!
September 17th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Grant Marshall was in the 2nd group (Lowell Devils) of training camp and it really doesnt look like he’s moving back up to the big devils any time soon… :/
Yeah, Cam was a great guy, and he really does deserve more. I cannot possibly express my happiness when he said he remembered me and my best friend. It may seem silly but I felt honored. I’ll keep sulking until I know Jamie is ok,(That’s how much I care about my favorite player) but at least he has time to recover…But it really does stink, especially since the season hasn’t even started yet. X-P
I have to agree with Josh, Asham-Rupp-Janssen does have a nice ring to it! But perhaps it should only be reserved for people who need a kick in the butt like Scott-all-for-the-money-Gomez and Brian-over-paid-Rafalski. Heh, and so the Horrifying “JAR” (or maybe ARJ, as in “arrr!” with a “j”) line went down in history as the most blood thirsty vengeful fighters in history. The end.
Feel better Jamie! (and I’ll keep on saying it till he does!)
September 17th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
O CRAP.
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/bd/fullj.getty-76097042bb005_philadelphia_.jpg
THIS IS BAD.
Great, first Jamie, now Cam, this doesn’t look too good…
poor Cam, that looks really painful. ;(
Well I not only want Jamie to feel better, but I really hope Cam is ok, especially after meeting him and seeing what a great guy he was…Man, I’m alot angrier now than I would have been had I not met the guy.
By the way, according to yahoo.com,
the score is:
2-0 Flyers.
…we have Weekes in goal, so don’t throw a fit with Marty.
September 17th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
are you kidding me?
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/3d/fullj.getty-76097042bb010_philadelphia_.jpg
are you kidding me?!
It looks like Cam’s right hand is injured…I have no idea how bad it is though, but this “Jesse Boulerice” (that son of a gun messing with cam) is officially on top of my list; right next to the senators.
Hang in there Cam…(and Jamie)
September 17th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
You know Aaron, having Sarge as a Captain suddenly sounds like a great idea.
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/e5/fullj.getty-76097042bb009_philadelphia_.jpg
don’t you think?
It is now the third period, and the score is:
3-2 Flyers
There’s still time for us to catch up. And I assume everyone must be pretty POed after what happened to Cam, so it looks like we’re getting fired up. >:)
September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Well, its final 3-2 Flyers…boo.
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/91/fullj.getty-76097042bb015_philadelphia_.jpg
glad to see Aaron was fighting back though.
I’m starting to like Asham quite alot lately…
