Let’s begin by taking a little field trip back to the beginning of the month-that-was. If, at the beginning of November, you told me the Devils would have a chance to take over 1st place in the Atlantic Division by early December, I would have asked you what you were smoking and if I could have some. Well, I recant my accusations of narcotic-usage; as the Devils will get their chance at the Division’s top spot when they host the Boston Bruins tonight.

Thanks in large part to a seven-game winning streak, the boys have surged up through the standings faster than Mark Recchi’s NHL career has ended. Currently, New Jersey sits third in the Atlantic, only two points away from the New York Rangers, whom I should mention will be idle tonight. That, in and of itself, makes tonight’s Devils/Bruins matchup bigger than the list of Flyers with suspensions. Even if the Devils can take Boston to OT, they will still gain a point on their rivals, and will be that much closer to the division lead. Of course, a win is what to shoot for – let’s not lose a grip on priorities, people!
Amid the happy times, there is a bit of bad news to relay – winger Jay Pandolfo will miss another game with what is being dubbed a “Pelvic-Area Injury”. The Devils will do all they can to not let that effect their recent success, but I can’t help but wonder how much longer they can hold up without one of their staples over the last decade. Don’t start to panic just yet – we don’t call him Super Jay for nothing.
As for the competition, the Bruins have been a mightily revamped team thus far through 2007-08, a hefty difference from past Bruins teams that made Boston sports fans contemplate wiping hockey off their agenda altogether. In another interesting twist, it is Claude Julien – last years bench boss for the Devils – who has been a major underlying factor in the team’s turnaround. Goaltender Tim Thomas & crew have put together a mighty fine string of performances that have helped the B’s to a healthy 14-9-2 record, good for 2nd in the Ottawa-dominated Northeast Division. The boys from Beantown are not to be taken lightly. (Anymore.)
So, ladies and gentlemen, don’t change those lucky undergarments just yet, there’s still some magic left in them! Trust me, I can smell it from here.
You know where to keep it for all the Live-Cap fun, comin’ at ya just before 7pm EST.

I know we’ve been playing with 7 defensemen and have been winning so why ruin a good thing?.?. But I still think Mike Rupp would benefit from being inserted into the lineup. Two reasons why:
Boston’s got a big guy, a fighter who’s a lot bigger than our guys. DC could probably match up pretty well, but still, he’s got DC by about 5 inches. I think his name is Milan Lukic (sp?). But also Ruppy hasn’t played in a while and he’s going to want to keep playing. Hence he’ll be bustin his ass all over the ice. That could be a good thing for us as well.
I don’t mind having Ruppy sit a game or two. But as long as he’s back in the line up and he’s playing hard for something, I think there might be something there.
However if he blows tonight, I’ll eat my words.

Anyword on how long Pando is out with the pelvic injury? have there been X-rays taken?
Joe Bechtel on Wed, 5th Dec 2007 3:25 pm
Randy,
From what I understand, Pando is listed as day-to-day. No word on X-Rays or anything of the sort. Even if there was, this is Lou we’re talking about, so we (the public) won’t know anyway.

Gionta vs. Chara…the showdown…
Should be a good game, Boston is proving that they can be a good team. I think they had the potential all along, just pulled it together this year. Also Chara is now being allowed to sneak down and shoot the puck more, as last year he was making passes more. I expect a BIG game from Elias tonight.
I’m sorry, did you say the New Jersey Devils could be tied for first place in the division with a win? No no no, you must be thinking of Satan……of the islanders.

Not to change the subject, but…. Fire and Ice is reporting Langenbrunner will be named captain sometime this week. If so, Congratulations to Jamie! He’ll make a great captain, a worthy leader for Red’n'Black!
