4 PM ET: Well, the deadline has long passed. Black ‘n Red added El Salvador, subtracted a Cammie J. Doesn’t look like there are any more deals to be announced. We will be sticking it out for a while longer just in case some random blockbuster deal is announced, but don’t hold your breath, mmkay? Am I disappointed? Sure. I don’t understand why we have nine defensemen, nor do I understand why Brian Gionta is still a Devil, but more on that later.
Alas, keep it with 2MA for any late breaking trades that may still pan out!

NJD GETS BRYCE SALVADOR
STL GETS CAM JANSSEN
JOE SAYS: Well, I have to admit, I almost forgot that Janssen was part of the team. It’s sad to see him go, but he had no spot in New Jersey anymore. The acquisition of Salvador is bizarre, the Devils now have a myriad of mediocre D-men. I’m sure more deals will be made.
PATRICIA SAYS: Eh. No love lost for Janssen on this end. Do we really need another average blueliner though? Oh Lou, how I wish I could understand your mind…
STEVE SAYS: Kinda perplexing to me in the absence of another move considering our glut of D-men. On it’s own I’m happy Cam’s headed home, and you can’t really argue with a guy who’s +12 on a team like the Blues.
JOSH SAYS: Bryce is a mediocre defensemen, and we have many, many mediocre defensemen. So, yeah, I’m confused. But a +12 on a team like St Louis can’t be a bad thing, right? The news of Cam’s departure saddens me greatly. Fare thee well, Mr. Janssen.

COL HAS SIGNED PETER FORSBERG TO A 1-YEAR DEAL
JOE SAYS: The more I think about it, the more this bothers me. There really should be a rule governing this type of BS — I think The Scott Niedermayer Clause has a nice ring to it.

Forsberg came back from an injury, Neider sat on his ass. There’s a bit of a difference. Forsberg’s ok in my book, but I don’t think it’s a smart move; it seems more out of desperation to get into the playoffs
Granted Forsberg was hurt, but I just don’t like the whole “Maybe-I-Will-Maybe-I-Won’t” stance. Didn’t he say circa two weeks ago that he wasn’t returning to the NHL?
I think there needs to be a line drawn somewhere. It just doesn’t sit right with me.
I think there was doubt in his mind that he could play. I think we both agree that if a player’s injured, it’s OK, but if he’s contemplating retirement, then it’s not. And in the event like Darren McCarty, the player is a free agent working his way back into the league, it’s also OK.
In sum, Neidermayer and Selanne are d-bags and I hope the new CBA has a clause preventing this. I’d also like to see an end to this “Tagging” BS that allowed Brian Burke to have Pronger, Neidermayer, Selanne, Bertuzzi, Schneider, and Giguere while only having to cough up Andy MacDonald for Doug Weight.
Ya hit the nail right on the head with that one, Aaron.
Well put!
Just hope Cam has better luck in St.Louis than Danton did!!
NOOOOOO! I DONT CARE THAT HE SUCKED AT HOCKEY. NOW I HOPE HE TAKES OUT HEPITA-ELIAS. DAMN YOU LOU ALBANO
I’m gonna order my st louis jersey with Janssen on the back. I’m glad he’s back home. Him and his parents are so excited. I’m extremely PISSED though. I’d so get rid of Asham faster than Cam. F* this! I knew something was gonna happen. TG said he wasn’t in Carolina with the team. I should have just expected the worse last night! Damn you Lou!
I love this blog and you guys are hilarious….but I gotta disagree with you Joe.
Salvador was one of the Blues top shutdown guys and according to ESPN, which is pretty accurate with this, he played almost 20min per game.
I don’t know if he’ll get that with the Devs but that takes some of the pressure off White, Martin and others from having to play top line minutes. We didn’t need a top guy and i’ll be damned if that wouldn’t of been expensive.
Salvador was ALSO a +12….not bad for a Blues team that’s been pretty bad the last few years till improving this season.
Brian –
Thanks for the kind words!
I had Tori Spelling eyes when I saw the +12 stat for Salvador. That in and of itself is something to covet!
I’m calling Vishnevski’s out. Maybe even Rachunek as well.
Cam hasn’t played all year and all he brought was some toughness, which we already have with 4 dudes. No offense but Cam brought nothing but 3 min of ice time and 5 min of penalty min per game with 3 pts all season. No huge loss.
Yea no kiddin man….making the playoffs for what….25 straight years is no easy thing to accomplish. They’re much improved this yr but still basically a 1-line team.
Tkachuk, Boyes, Kariya….they’ve got some talent but still are pretty thin depth-wise.
What sites are you using for info on the deadline? Cablevision finally got NHLNetwork which was awesome, but then we got FIOS.
They’re in the process of updating their channels but not for another few months. Fortunately, NHL.com has streaming video of the channel which is broadcasting TSN.
Spector’s is usually great stuff but he hasn’t updated his blog all day for some reason. Usually gets this stuff right away.
Kuklas Korner is pretty good as is James Mirtle, Toronto Globe sportswriter
http://www.kuklaskorner.com/
http://mirtle.blogspot.com/
Something else has GOT to be going down.
Oh to be a fly on the wall of Lou’s office right now…
Brian –
I’m using NHLnetwork on TV, also F5-ing the following regularly:
http://www.sportsnet.ca
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl
http://www.thefourthperiod.com
http://www.hockeybuzz.com – just cuz lol
LOL awesome
So happy that the NHL really is the best at web-based content. Otherwise i’d be lost and in withdrawal right about now.
I’m still pissed I can’t even watch NHL Network…i’m hockey obsessed with having to watch only locals.
Fortunately the Rangers and Isles are actually a little good which makes them watchable when I need my hockey fix.
I’d love to get Richards which they’re talkin bout….too bad the Lightning signed him to a obnoxious deal. He’d be a great top center for the Devs.
Eklund to 2 Man Advantage for Bechtel and a writer to be named (e2)
That’s a good trade for TB and DAL. We had to suspect Smith was gonna get a shot to be a #1.
Hockey Buzz can keep Eklund. We cannot have a Flyers insider infest 2manadvantage. Bechtel must stay! I still think another trade is coming for a top six forward and Rachonek and Vineshki are out of here. I like the trade. Salvador is the perfect type of third pair D man to skate with Greene. Cam had no place with the Devils. Let’s face it, Clarkson has made Cam expendable. I would also like to see Asham shipped out for a draft pick. The guy is useless.
Thanks for your defense, Randy!
Josh, I will not waive my NTC!!!!
Hope you have a nice PC Joe….feel like I have my old 60mhz PII pc again.
Freezing a little and lagging with every trade site open from TSN’s Jay Onrait’s blog to nhl.com and James Mirtle and the streaming video of TSN.
It’s not even a slow pc but with the sites constantly being refreshed if we don’t all cause the sites to crash, it’ll explode by 3pm!
1st Round pick for Adam Foote? Really? At this point in his career? I mean, going back to an organization that clearly loves him and all, but that seems all out of whack.
They’re dismantling and gearing up again for the future.
They came real close but supposedly they were gunning for Richards. Now that they lost him I guess they figured might as well get what they can.
They’ll have a lot of cash available for free agency and Foote’s a UFA I think so they could possibly even get him if they wanted.
if you get traded do we have to relocate babe? i refuse to go to edmonton! lol
Penguins are going for it all… Hossa to Pens
I kind of agree with you Joe about Forsberg. First he said he wasn’t playing. Then changes his mind to go to Colorado. Whatever. That’s dumb cause they got no goaltending.
I think the league needs to adapt a rule preventing this sorta stuff from happening.
Aaron, I gotta disagree. Weight is old. McDonald has more yrs left and has done alright with the Blues. Ducks are still the team to beat though.
So the Devils, who were deep on D already, made themselves deeper on D and did not address the one area they needed to address – scoring? What am I missing here? The Penguins and Senators now have to be considered the favorites out of the East.
Oh Crap. IN LOU WE TRUST. Come on Lou, as you say on the radio “‘Good’ is not good enough when better is expected.”
as of 3:10pm if this is all the Devils did, I’m confused. Exactly what Jeff said, we have too many Dmen as it is. We should have unloaded 2 guys and addressed getting deeper on O.
Pens gave up way too much for Hossa. Armstrong and Christiensen are strong players with a lot of upside. Esposito was a first-rounder in his own right and fell several spots lower than people expected him to. Plus a 1st round pick; this is overkill. Atlanta gets 4 1st rounders and Pittsburgh gets an expiring contract?
Pens are making a run for this year but they gave away their.
Where’s Claude Lemieux when we need him?
How much longer is Gimpy Crosby going to be out, anyway?
“So the Devils, who were deep on D already, made themselves deeper on D and did not address the one area they needed to address – scoring? What am I missing here? The Penguins and Senators now have to be considered the favorites out of the East.”
I don’t know bout the Sens. They’ve been awesome all yr but they still rely on their top line of Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson too much. Stillman helped as they can split them up a little but Lapointe has 7pts this season and as the guys on TSN said, hasn’t scored in like 15 games.
They added some depth and better players for their top 12 but if they’re still having problems even after getting Stillman and Commodore then they’ve obviously got other issues.
There’s always the Emery situation too
Way to go Lou–way to make those game-time decisions. C’mon, we didn’t get anyone?!?!
No more watching Cam kick Avery’s ass. Very bummed we didn’t make another move. I think an ambulance took someone up the road with a heart attack after they learned that Hossa was sent to the Pens. Just imagine… Hossa, Crosby and Malkin on a PP. Good thing we have 9 dmen… we’ll need them all to play against the Pens!
There’s no more trades being done. They said on the NHL network the Devils were done making trades.
Why the hell do we have 9 Dmen?
Why the hell didn’t we bolster our O? And Lou don’t tell me we have a solid team. We can always get better on O, considering we don’t have a sniper, there’s always room to improve.
We could have gotten rid of Vish and Rack for a forward. Not too happy right now. However I hope I eat my words.
The Salvador trade was a no-brainer. A third D paring of Salvador and Greene is excellent. Salvador was a team leading +12 on St Louis. I do not understand why Vineshski and Rachoneck were not traded for 4th or 5th Rd draft picks? they could help somebody and we need to get them out of here. I also can’t figure out why Lou did not pick up another top 9 forward. Brylin needs to center the fourth line with Clarkson and Rupp. I like Rupp but he is a winger. Rupp is much to slow to play center on any line and is a corner/board man. Asham is just an extra player in case an injury occurs. That leaves a void of either a 2nd or 3rd line right wing depending on which line Zubrus plays on. I still have my fingers crossed a forward is on the way.
Meh, we went from having a goon we didn’t need to having a ninth defensemen we don’t need.
As much as not getting any help on O stings, I like the Salvador trade. We all knew Cam was more than expendable with the simple fact that Clarkson can use his stick as well as his fists.
My roomate, a die-hard blues fan who is furious about the trade, say’s although nothing special, Bryce is solid and consistant. These are qualities that will help Greene out while he develops.
Nothing glamourous today, but we are the Devils, doesn’t have to be fancy, just has to work.
Why Cam, why?! I don’t care how good this Salvador guy is, we have enough crappy d-men as it is! I’m gonna miss him…
i dont care how useless cam was, he was such a fan favorite and great guy. he’ll be missed in jersey despite his one goal… in like 100 games. hope he has better luck at home in st louis. im interested to see Salvador i mean +12 on st louis, gotta be decent at least.
Just wanted to let you know–under the JS Aubin trade and the Hlavac trade, you mixed up who was getting who.
But on a more on-topic note, I thought this was a healthy trade day, with little extremely important activity in Devil-land and some head scratchers elsewhere (…Huet?). But a fun day to watch if nothing else.
You got a serviceable D for a guy who doesn’t play. That’s a smart deal.
Pens are going for it. When you have superstars like Crosby and Malkin plus Gonchar, you go for it. Watch Dupuis make a difference too. They essentially lost nothing off their roster.
Damn Patricia…how the hell can you say that about Gionta??? Seriously???
Cant’ help but wonder what deal Lou was attempting that didn’t pan out. He admitted he was planning to deal some other Dmen and it didn’t work. I mean we don’t need 9 when we feel like we have 2 too many anyways.
