Devils Can’t even Beat Awful Isles

The New York Islanders (5-12-5) gave themselves something to be thankful for and snapped a 14 game losing streak  with a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils (7-13-2) in hockey action on Friday afternoon.

“You know what I’m just happy for the guys. I thought we played extremely well in Atlanta and against Columbus, and we didn’t get rewarded the point. It’s a good feeling for the boys,” said head coach Jack Capuano when asked how his first NHL victory felt.

In a feisty, hard hitting game between the two Metropolitan rivals as the hits as it didn’t take long for fireworks to ignite between these two teams.  Then it was Jesse Joensuu (1) who tallied the first goal of the game at the 1:32 mark.  The winger connected on his first goal of the season with some nice passing from Frans Nielsen (10) and Michael Grabner (3) to give the Islanders the early advantage.

“I actually lost the puck in the neutral zone there. I got it back and gave it to Martinek.” Joensuu said of his first goal of the season. “He gave it to Grabner, and I just thought about skating to the net, and then Grabner gave it to Frans. I saw I was open at that point in time and called for the puck. It was a great play. I think it went right through the legs of one of the d-men.”

Eventually tensions boiled over between the two teams and the first fight broke out at the 11:49 mark of the first period. The fight happened right after Colin White laid out a huge hit on P.A. Parenteau that was eventually ruled as a boarding call by the officials. Bruno Gervais took exception to White’s hit and eventually decided to drop gloves with the veteran blue-liner, something that can be found with online betting at Bet US.

White didn’t take very long to be victorious in the scrap taking just two punches before being victorious.

The scrape along with the boarding gave the Islanders their second power play opportunity in the game, but the Islanders could not cash in on the three minute opportunity.  Joensuu took another good shot at the 17:48 mark of the first period, but the snap shot was saved by Devils keeper Johan Hedberg.

Islanders keeper Rick DiPietro was strong early in the first period making several impressive stops, including a glove save on a wicked 17 foot slap shot by Jason Arnott at the 18:29 mark, holding his team to a 1-0 lead. The Islanders also out shot New Jersey by a tally of 13-5, while also out hitting the Devils, 14-3 in a strong first period of play.

New York continued to keep up their offensive momentum along with playing a very good defensive side of the ice. New York was able to kill off the Devils first power play of the game at the 2:19 mark, as the Islanders were able to keep the Devils out of their offensive zone.

Rob Schremp (2) then netted the second Islanders goal at the 5:15 mark in the second period. Connecting on a 13 foot wrist shot that was assisted by Blake Comeau (7) and James Wisniewski (12) to give the Islanders the 2-0 lead.

Both team had some stellar opportunities as at the 10:04 mark David Clarkson let off a 25 foot snap shot that was saved by Rick DiPietro. The Islanders had a golden opportunity at the 11:54 mark as John Tavares was inches away from netting the third goal, but the puck was saved by Devils keeper Johan Hedberg.

The scrapes and hard hits would continue on into the second period as the Islanders skated into the locker room with the 2-0 lead much to the delight of the 10,897 in attendance. The Islanders also held the shots advantage by a tally of 19-16.

New Jersey was able to gain the offensive momentum in the third period of play, but could not cash in on any goals as DiPietro was stellar in his shutout bid and New York skated away with the 2-0 victory. The keeper, who was awarded with the first star of the game ended the night with 29 saves. On the other end of the ice Devils keeper Johan Hedberg made 18 saves.

“Ricky’s played extremely well since I’ve been here,” said Islanders coach Jack Capuano. “He’s done real well in practice and it’s carried over in the last few games that he’s played.”

DiPietro would have this to say on the victory, “I think it’s a culmination of a lot of hard work over the last couple of weeks. The hard work was there, but there were a lot of mistakes. Today we ended those mistakes, created some chances and had a huge win.”

One of the biggest keys to the victory for the Islanders was killing off a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Devils in the third period of play.

“It was huge for us. We talked about it going into the third: stay out of the penalty box and limit turnovers,” Blake Comeau said of the penalty kill. “It was just a tough break. Wiz (James Wisniewski) was going for the puck and got his stick up, but you get a 5-on-3 kill like that and kill off the whole four-minute power play. It goes to show that we’re battling hard and it’s good to finally see the results.”

DiPietro also had this to say of the 5-on-3 penalty kill,” It was huge. It is kills like that, that can turn a whole season around. I could feel the energy in the building and the energy on the bench. I think that’s a big thing for us. Our team feeds off energy.”

The next test for the Islanders is to see if they can take that energy and convert it to a couple of victories in a row. New York will now enjoy a few days off before hosting their next Metropolitan Rival in the New York Rangers for a home-and-home series. The Islanders will host the Rangers on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. then will go to Madison Square Garden for a 7:00 p.m. face-off.

“We can’t be satisfied with just one win. We can’t act like we’ve won 14 in a row. We have to realize on what got us success tonight,” said Blake Comeau on what needs to be done next. “Moving forward we have to play three hard periods.”

Coach Capuano also had this to say of the steps the Islanders need to take now, “There’s a lot of ground to make up. For me, it is just one practice at a time, one game at a time. That’s all I’m looking at right now.”

Charity note: Prior to both Wednesday night’s game against Columbus and Friday afternoon game against the Devils the Islanders hosted a food drive with Island Harvest to help put a big hit on hunger this Thanksgiving. Fans were encouraged to bring three or more non-perishable food items and received one ticket voucher for a future Islanders game.

Thoughts from Section 209: Devils vs Canes, Dec 9, 2009

STAND BACK!! There’s a Hurricane comin through!!! And much like said Hurricane in the WWE, this one’s beat-up.. worn down… injured often… and it don’t win too much… though it does get close enough to give you a legit scare now and then…. and with this being game 2 of a 4 in 6 stretch… and two more home games next week… holy shit I might run out of material!!!!

the Good:
– Another AWESOME first period… hell this game mirrored the Buffalo first period, except Carolina tried and gave an effort to get back into this one….
– Each time we mentioned Andy in the game thread on my facebook status…. Andy would respond with a goal… the timing was beautifully hilarious :)
– Colin White… damn he hit the shit out of people… and that one shift in the second period where he took down Ruutu (I think)… and then kept slamming him on to the ice… and then some other Carolina player came to take a run at Colin… and just BOUNCED OFF…it prompted me to just laugh out stupid loud because the whole thing was hilarious! Dare I even say it.. Colin played PIST!! (not to be confused with a FIST or MIST… or even pissed… this is more an I WANT ATTENTION AND I WANT IT NOW kinda angry… who knew Colin was a fake blonde attention whore?? (Salvador also had a nice physical game when he came back from the boarding incident…thank God… we need him!)
– Rob Niedermayer had another shifty and smart game, and the damndest empty netter you may ever see….
ditto this on McAmmond… he’s a faster John Madden with a bit more sense in the offensive end… pity he’s stuck with some major slug players on that 4th line….
– Brian Rolston too… he’s been better and more a part of this team since his “heart palpitations” (a crack I made on the 2ma FB when Rolston missed a game)… but I think playing with that Elias guy helps too……

the Bad:
– Hey I am a big fan of low attendance turnouts… and you knew this was a who cares kinda game, but man that whole crowd was comatose tonight… it was like they made that drive with me back from Buffalo….
– Jamie Langenbrunner… way to whiff on the open net… and it’s weird… he’s putting up numbers… but something seems WRONG in his game now… I can’t place it…maybe he’s just losing a step… this is not as bad as it could be since Bergfors (and Clarkson when healthy) have done well with Parise/Zajac and he’s not needed on the top line….
– Once again a damn Sutter goes out and screws up a special Devils moment in this building… least this time it was actually his JOB too… and he didn’t run and hide in Calgary after either!
– the Devils did kinda get a little too happy with themselves at 3-0, but least when the game got scary they got back to what they did…. and this team’s never gonna play “a full 60 minutes” most fans cry for (hell most teams DON’T AND CAN’T).. but they have enough moxie to get back into it and win them more often then not… and the right way too….
– Mike Mottau was not good tonight… too much time in the box, and maybe all the excessive minutes are wearing on him…..

the Funny:
– a random conversation and a story on ESPN (God help me for even gazing at that channel on accident made me think of this)…but hey if Congress… yes CONGRESS… can sit and actually try to PASS A LAW that College Football needs a national championship playoffs (and we thought the steriod hunt was stupid)…. if our govt. wants to waste their time and our tax dollars…. ya think they can spend a few minutes and REMOVE the shootouts from the NHL game…. please?? really?? For my birthday on Sunday?? CMON!!! Or maybe make the NHL have compitent management?? Ah I dream…. I dream… least I’m not dreaming in Spanish :p
– Poor Cam Ward… the crowd was so dead NO ONE yelled “AND I HOPE YOU DIEEEE” at Cam Ward when Pete would scream “HEY WARD YOU SUCK!!!”…. I guess he gets to live??? Though I did like Lil Nicky yelling “AND YOU’RE HURT!!!”
** Rob Tonnesen: what makes ward so special??? why does he get to live??? i guess somewhere clint malarchuck is smiling
…..i always gotta go the extra mile
** Scott Mackie: You haven’t gone the extra mile till you make a brett hull reference in buffalo!
– this was creepy:
** Rob Tonnesen: did zajac piss someone off?? why is he playing with pikachu (8:29pm)
** Scott Mackie: Zajac with pikkachu and pelley, who did travis make angry?? (8:29pm)
** Scott Mackie: Dude, that’s creepy!! (8:30pm)
** Rob Tonnesen: agreed as soon as i saw that i was like oh wtf

…. still just WEIRD timing….
– Lord Krang: I wanna see a Rod Pelley goal
Me: buy the video game…
Andrew:…and the player editor….

– the Andy Greene worship!!
** Rob Tonnesen: i dont think im going to be having a running commentary anymore its been too weird lol…. stan fishler is interviewing andy and called him an all star
** Scott Mackie: There is no all-star game this year :p
** Doug Mecca: well hes an all star in my mind anyway
** Scott Mackie: They’re renaming the all-star team the all-andy team!
** Rob Tonnesen: is this before or after they rename the norris trophy the greene trophy
– Scott Mackie: Andy Greene doesn’t need a hat trick to bne great, the hat trick needs Andy Greene for validation!
** Doug Mecca: that was my thinking, maybe they should just call it an andy greene ” player x gets his 1st goal then his 2nd AND GOIN FOR AN ANDY GREENE OHHHHH “

Thoughts from Section 209: Devils vs Caps, Nov 14, 2009

You know… it’s funny… I think I’ve grown up… a LOT in the last few years (say what you want and I know you will)… and in that time maybe a little bit, I’ve redefined what being a sports fan is to me … Yeah seeing your team win (regardless of sport)… yeah that’s awesome… but you know what really the best part of being a REAL sports fan… it’s about sitting in the same place with them all and enjoying it… I’ve been real lucky this year…. my little 209 army is growing… and boy we have a FOCUS NOW… simply put… the GREATNESS of Andy Greene…. we have a church and it meets 41 times a year in Newark… COME WORSHIP at the Altar of the GREENE MACHINE!!!! (all that and the Devils 1000th win as a franchise… nice little achievement!!)

the Good:
– the power play… I can barely remember a time when the Devils pp was good for a GOAL A GAME like it’s been the last few weeks… that’s scary good, and hell… always fun to yell EARMUFFS…. FUCK YOU SAM ROSEN!!!!!!!!!!
– Bounce-back… yeah they were down two and looked dead at the start of the game… and yeah they’d come back under Sutter even… but with Sutter it was “beat the vets into the ground” hockey… now it’s Murphy (more on him in the funny), Halischuk.. hell even Colin White with the “seeing eye goal” too… it’s a DIFFERENT… hell BETTER way to come back in a hockey game!! (and this team will benefit greatly from the young guys getting into the mix and REALLY adding to this team!)
– Tim Sestito… you’ve been initiated… thanks to Rob marking out over his assist…. it’s SESTITO SANTANA!! ARRRRIBAA!!!!
– Cory Murphy… yes even you have been saved by the Church of Greene!!! And poor Rob… he made his GF a bet that if Cory Murphy scored a pp goal… he’d buy her his jersey… he assists on the pp goal… and scores at even strength… I say he still owes her one!! Hell when he scored I chanted… HEY…. YOU’RE FUCKED and pointed at him the whole time…. it was funny!
hell even…. Lord Krang *Plays taps for rob*
– I’ll even break the ice and say… mb30 was actually pretty… GOOD… tonight… saw my first HOLY SHIT save of the year… hell other small miracles in life happened… had to throw the Ego a bone eh??

the Bad:
– ZUBBIE COUNTER DENIED… booo on you Colin White!!!!!
– well the first 5 minutes were just HARSH… but once they got past that….
– Holy Shit…. Andrew Peters is so bad he scratches himself when he plays NHL ’10!!
– I really got nothing else here… well aside of no ANDY’S BETTER chant aimed at the clearly lesser of the Green’s!!!
– all the Peanut Butter Poti comments at Tom Poti made me DAMN HUNGRY for a Peanut Butter sandwich…. if I had any in the house!

the Funny:
– Well I had a bad day today before getting to the game… work was slow (and worse.. on a Saturday…) I felt like hell… and I’m wrapping up my second computer job… it’s 430…. I’m ready to go once the AVG installs… THE DUDE PULLS OUT THE PLUG ON THE SURGE PROTECTOR and damn near outs the WHOLE OFFICE *sigh*… least he slipped me $20 and I was out the door by 5!
– I’m all at the game… all relaxed… ate my nachos… all ready for warmups… and then this:
I get stuck with the most complete and total moron by me in warmups:
First he goes “I’m gonna throw this beer on the caps when they come out”…um how are you going to do that from the zamboni entrance??
And then he calls ovechkin as big a pussy as crosby?? Really take your god hoodie and get the fuck out of my arena!!… or better sent out to Anaheim to root for the pond scum as he tries to make more stupid bragger comments to the girl with him (it was so seriously bad I typed out on my phone to the girl next to me “I don’t mean to be rude or a jerk, but this guy could possibly be the stupidest guy on the planet and I want to hurt him!!”… she laughed :D
– Got my Andy Greene jersey from the NHL Store in the mail on Friday… yay… the problem is this lil “fatass” lost too much weight and the XL Jersey is kinda… gigantic…. and it’s more like I have an Andy Greene SNUGGIE…. more then a damn jersey… but I guess our Andy is snuggie-worthy!!!
– the “Jose… Joseeeeeee” chant at Theodore

(****NEW****) the Andy Greene Section of WORSHIP!!!!:
– Scott Mackie: Andy Greene did not miss that puck, it was part of a grander play that none of us mortals can understand!!
– Scott Mackie: Wow what a pass breakup and block by Greene!!
Rob: is it me or is greene the 2nd coming of Jesus?
No, jesus was the pre-cum of andy sir!!
– Lord Krang: hey, Andy Greene is go great, he even makes his teammates do the impossible. see Murphy, Colin white tonight
– Tammie Hamilton…the caps pbp says the mike green and Andy Greene are not related just so you know………..
** Lord Krang…because the e for excellent at the end of Andy’s name didn’t already tip us off to that…
** Scott Mackie: I think we can all admire having an extra “E” in my life had benefited me again ?
** Tammie Hamilton like tammiE ;-) lol
** Lord Krang i ? this thread
** Scott Mackie…Soooo I was about to make a jets joke, rob’s friend paul goes “hey no talk of pain when andy greene is on the ice”….kick/wham breakaway goal…
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH PARISE!!!!
(Funny how the more homage we paid to the Greene machine the more the WHOLE TEAM was scoring!!)
– Scott Mackie “Andy Greene won the 2005 stanley cup…by himself!!”
And again we make an awesome Greene joke and we score
That’s awesome!!!!!
(see, living proof, thank you facebook!!)
– Josh Burnett: yea, though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i shall fear no evil, for Andy Greene bat the living shit out of it. (we scored again FYI)
– Scott Mackie: Andy Greene is so good that he gets a plus one on pp goals!!!
– Lord Krang Official stats so far: Andy Greene, 0 assists, +3. Mike Green, 2 assists, -1
(Andy Greene is so much better we need not chant, we KNOW)

Well there ya go… damn that was fun again… thanks to all who helped add to the greatness of Andy Green… mass is over… you may now face-check in peace!!!

Thoughts from Section 209… Devils vs Islanders: Nov. 6, 2009!

Well that was maybe the most bizarre night of my life… (and I’ve had a LOT of bizarre nights before)…..so from running a gambit of unneeded ex-GF memories…. and one showing up in my Section last night (sometimes it’s NOT good to be famous :p )… to a Cory Murphy GOAL being scored…..holy hell it was a strange night last night…..but I’ll try to get to it all… least we can laugh at my insanity in this fine hockey bastion of bad language and Buffalo-hating douchebags!

the Good:
– WELCOME BACK PATRIK ELIAS!!!!!! And holy hell that deke-willie move he made in the first period… looked like he had been here all along!! (though he’s not playing tonight….)… a secondary benefit on Elias being back, Brian Rolston seemed a LOT more loose and comfortable on the ice (maybe he was doing something John Madden was guilty of and trying to hard to fill in for the guy when doing what you do is enough to do it)
– soo… mb30, 8-4 2.38 gaa and a 91%… not bad…. Danis (I keep wanting to type Denis from that “next coming of Patrick Roy” goalie from Colorado who couldn’t stop a school bus in Tampa or Columbus… I’ll learn.. just keep playing him!!), he’s now 2-0 with a 1.00 gaa and a SICK 96% shots stopped ratio…. I smell goalie controversy ;)
– Andy Greene, Colin White, Mike Mottau and Bryce Salvador are simply CARRYING this team defensively at this point and this really can’t be stated enough… if people heard this was our top 4 a month ago (or under Brent Sutter… no I can’t bash him enough either… we’d have 3 wins right now)… people would be AMAZED we’re where we are… so I don’t wanna hear the “well we only beat the Islanders 2-1… stuff it!!!
– And what better place for this….. now… our moment of Andy Greene, sadly it’s an off-ice moment now…(it added to the weird last night… Cory Murphy was good and Andy wasn’t… I guess seeing all the AHL Talent on the Islanders brought out the best in Murphy and made Andy play down to the competition!)… so I am checking my facebook this morning, if you know the social interview app you know I love it and use it often…..
** Kristen gets asked: “What is Scott Mackie’s idea of a great movie?”
she answers ”Andy Greene and Sylar fighting side by side against the forces of Nathan Petrelli, MB30 and the New York Rangers. Oh, and football.”… which made me reply:
** Scott Mackie wow, if Andy Greene ever swung a lightsaber I might have to have his babies!!!
– since I commented on the Rolston goal… I need to comment on the other goal too….hell I was so disturbed by it… it should have it’s own thread…..first comment was I had to make a facebook comment:”
** Scott Mackie Murphy[1] from pikkachu and pelley!!! Really in 2009?? WTF!!!!!!!
** Lord Krang Despite a little recent success, the Islanders are still the Islanders, for now. This is the proof.
(she did nail it eh?)
my secondary comment was, the only thing missing from this was a sympathy point for Andrew Peters (who according to his dad as a grown adult still skates slower the lil Nicky who’s been on skates all of what, 5 months now?)… I wonder if I keep bashing Peters will I get called more nicer insults by our non-friends in Buffalo… oh boy I can’t wait to find YOU guys when I am there!!!! See unlike them when I go… I can wear jerseys from CHAMPIONSHIP teams!!!!

the Bad:
– Brent Russo…. is there a WORSE rendition of the National Anthem anywhere, outside of William Hung or the other awesomely funny “YOU ARE MY BROTHER” dude from American Idol… don’t make me link a you tube video of…. I will!!
– Looks like Rob Niedermayer is gonna be out sometime with the lower body injury, which means he doesn’t get to board Scott and tell him that mommy said to get traded right now (I wondered about Scott’s heart when he was here… but his ABILITY is unquestioned, even when his passion for the game is in doubt, and we are short a few defenders now….)
– Note to the NHL Referee who screwed this up…. I know he doesn’t play it all the time… but our boy Zubbie is like a FOOT taller then Parise, so when you tag him and send him to the box PLEASE do not pull a Cangelosi and call number NINE for the penalty when Zubbie is NUMBER EIGHT (damn you Rob, this was going right into the Zubbie Counter I wanted you to do)
– there’s really not a lot of bad you can say about this one…. Devils played pretty good here… though no points for Parise which kept the teenage Jonas-type screans (are they still relevant?)…. to a low minimum!

the Funny:
– and do we have it here! I guess I’ll start with this… I have a “fake son” (no not my yet, and before people breath a sigh of relief, my sister has 3 beautiful girls who’s minds I am corrupting and taking over just like I would my own children, so my influence will NOT die with me alone!)…. but anyway… my fake son is much like his dad…. he loves the Cowboys, he’s an arrogant lil ass (though he took growth steroids to get big like the rest of us), and he’s off in Minnesota with his lil internet girlfriend….SEE WHY HE’S MY SON?? So anyway…. my son decides to mouth off about the Devils in the Facebook game status… and I unleashed a comment even I won’t repeat here…. so he comes back with…ummm… “Well Fuck the Giants then??” … and that we can allow and my son is safe from the Chris Benoit treatment when he gets back home!
– I thought about this last night as I was eating in the Devils restaurant (and hey if you play the Islanders… gotta eat some flounder right??? The food was MUCH better then it was last year FYI)… and I do believe it was Joe (yeah one of the “where the hell is he” two-man’ers in limbo right about now)…. he made a comment… well didn’t the Islanders win like 4 in a row coming into tonight… which simply prompted…. “well that’s the glory of the Islanders… they win four in a row, they sit back… they sigh about 1981 and then just simply give up on life again and cry in their crusty and moldy old banners!!”
– Even during the game things were a little out of whack….the cotton candy guy (who must be qutting, getting fired… or knowing this team: getting promoted)… was walking around carrying his wares… and instead of the sales pitch (also on that note, if you’ve never heard “the Candyman” work it to sell his candy, you are missing a show!!)…. he simply mumbles in a “I’m gonna jump off a bridge” tone….. “Get your overpriced food HERE… overpriced cotton candy… who wants some??”…. Dude, you are a hero in a night full of weird-o!
– And thank you Josh for not sitting with us and catching this one:
“Please tell me you saw Pelley diving headfirst into the boards to avoid a too many men penalty? It was quite possibly the greatest thing I’ve seen Rod Pelley do since drawing the double-double high sticking minors. It was like someone checked him into the bench, only that someone was himself.”
– so after the game I get invited to a birthday party of one of my Sun Tavern bartender friends, I figure… why not? Go hang out and have some fun…. get to the place…try to find everyone… go past the wine and beer stand…. and load up on Argentine wine and Coors Light… those who really know, understand how funny and fucked up that is in the same night of having another ex invade my section (and thanks guys… I really needed the “you dated THAT” looks and comments… oh BOY!!)… and nothing like taking the dude’s picture and ten seconds later he falls out of the chair!!! I still owe him for my 36th party last year :p

Well that was fun, albeit wholly BIZARRE all in one… and I am sure I did a lousy job of relaying the bizzarre, but I gotta get to the hockey game Josh is setting up in Woodbridge… and for all you haters… be at Ford’s Field at Noon… and come try to shut me up with a little hockey game…. I DARE YOU :p…. not like I won’t be back with Wednesday with a team I hate like the Rangers… PONDSCUM!!!!!!!

Wait, the Sabres are good?

So who’d have thought that this stretch of games against the Rangers, Penguins, and Sabres would prove to be an early-season measuring stick?  I mean, Penguins, of course.  Rangers & Penguins?  Okay, maybe.  But where the HELL did the Sabres come from?

The Sabres sit at 6-1-1 coming into tonight’s game at The Rock.  This means that the Devils last three opponents will have had a total of FIVE combined losses on the season before the Devils got their hands on ‘em.

The win over the Penguins Saturday night was costly, however.  As you may know by now, both Paul Martin and Jay Pandolfo will be out 4-6 weeks due to seperate arm owies.  While Super Jay has been having a great year so far, he’s somewhat replacable in the lineup (Matt Halischuk probably gets regular playing time now).  But Paul Martin?  His loss could suck.  It could suck a lot.

I mean, because Paul Martin’s out, the Devils called up Cory Murphy.  THAT’S how much the loss of Martin sucks.  Granted, Murph was called up as a seventh defenseman, and won’t be in the lineup tonight, but still.  Our D-corps is pretty banged up in the early going, with Mike Mottau coming back from injury and Colin White and Bryce Salvador both puck magnets.  Factor in Johnny Oduya being less amazing than he has been, and our defense is basically Andy Greene and a buncha scrubs.  Lucky for us, Andy Greene = Wins.

The Devils are 5-0 on the road, which kind of sucks because tonight’s a home game.  In the friendly confines of Newark, New Jersey, the team is 1-3.  And the one win came against a surprisingly bad Carolina team.  That’s…not so good.  A win tonight, however, and all early-season home struggles are forgiven.

Come back here post-game for a Scott Mackie-style post-game recap!  Also, I’m not going to PROMISE it, but there’s gonna be a LiveCap coming eventually.  I haven’t forgotten, I just tend to be in class during the games.  I’ll set one up soon and let you, the loyal 2MA reader, know well in advance.  It’ll be a little party, it will!

Scott Stevens, was that you? (A half-cap, if you will)

11:53 PM ET: A bittersweet moment, but we must give congratulations to Richard H. as he has taken home the 2MA t-shirt. Thanks to all who entered!
____

10:10 PM ET: What a waste. Season over.

10:08 PM ET:
…and that’s that. Staal fires one past Marty with just seconds left. You’ve gotta be kidding me.

10:07 PM ET:
Devils with the timeout. I’m not sure my heart can handle this.

10:06 PM ET:
Well, we have a minute left. Please do not break my heart, New Jersey.

10:05 PM ET:
DAMN IT DAMN IT DAMN IT.  Tied game.

10:01 PM ET:
Marty with a purty glove save on Rod Brind’amour. Do I need to bust out the You Go Girl picture? I think I do. Ever since that crap goal Brodeur gave up early in the first, he’s been on FI-YAH.

9:57 PM ET:
Two-on-one, Madden and Whitey. That’s almost as good as a Colin White penalty shot.

9:51 PM ET:
Martin Brodeur is a pretty darn good goalie. Just sayin’. He’s keepin’ the lead for the Devils right now.

9:51 PM ET:
Cam Ward is a pretty darn good goalie. Just sayin’. He’s keepin’ the Canes in it right now.

9:47 PM ET:
Madden with the game on his stick, can’t quite get it high enough on Ward. Consequently, Tuomo Ruutu gets absolutely reamed by Patty Elias. This has not been Ruutu’s night.

9:47 PM ET:
GOOD KILL GOOD KILL GOOD KILL

9:46 PM ET:
MARTIN BRODEUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11ONE!1

9:45 PM ET:
Captain-brunner takes a bad penalty…no good. This is a huge kill here. DO IT.

9:38 PM ET:
Madden and Pandolfo on a two-on-one? Wow, I’m having serious flashbacks here.

9:33 PM ET:
So, yeah, normally the Rangers Suck chants annoy the heck outta me, but there’s something so divine about hearing 17,625 fans mocking the failed season of the Blueshirts in unison.

Loves it.

9:32 PM ET:
HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN? Elias, you’re fired.

9:29 PM ET:
Let us all take a moment bow our heads in silence for the Rangers’ 2009 season. Rest in Peace, New York. Rest in Peace.

…Nelson, I need to borrow your laugh right here.

_____
9:15 PM ET: Oh, and thanks to everyone who entered the 2MA t-shirt contest! Winner will be announced at the conclusion of tonight’s contest!
_____

9:13 PM ET: And we’re done with two! Devils with an additional buck-twenty left on the power play going into the third period.  I need a drink.

9:11 PM ET: Atta-boy, Zachy. Good to see Parise back on the ice immediately after getting his cheek ripped open.

9:08 PM ET:
Okay, I was totally kidding about, you know, any injury to Zach Parise. Poor pretty boy takes a stick to the face, draws blood and we’re on a four-minute man advantage. Make Gleason and the Canes pay Black ‘n Red!

9:04 PM ET:
GOOD KILL GOOD KILL GOOD KILL

9:02 PM ET:
I’m going to punch Zach Parise in the knee. Keep your stick down holmes! ‘Nother penalty kill for the Devils. Gotta stop taking the penalties.

9:00 PM ET:
GOOD KILL GOOD KILL GOOD KILL

8:56 PM ET:
If Facebook had a Does Not Like button, I’d click it for that play. BAD PENALTY CALL for flip’s sakes! Two-man advantage for the wrong team. Huge kill coming up. DO IT BOYZ! ‘Kay, maybe Facebook has taken over my life too.

Speaking of, add us on Facebook! …ah crap. Addicted.

8:50 PM ET: YUS!! POWER PLAY GOAL SUCKAS! 3-2 NEW JERSEY! What a PLAY by Brian Gionta! Amazing awareness, throws it over to Brian Rolston who *gasp* FINALLY GETS A GOAL! Oh my GOSH it’s like it was in the stars…

8:48 PM ET:
Solid shift by Black ‘n Red results in another pee-pee. If I don’t get my power play goal, I’m going to cry.

8:37 PM ET:
Uh…defense? Hello? Tied game. That power play goal would have been lovely, eh? Whatever, Ray Whitney is stupid.

8:36 PM ET:
Why does our power play suck so much?

8:34 PM ET:
Huge pee-pee! …uh…that sounds wrong. I WANT A POWER PLAY GOAL DARN IT.

8:33 PM:
‘Kay, Brendan Shanahan is awesome. Solid two-way play tonight by the 75893-year-old forward.

8:15 PM: PS Jay Pandolfo can grow a playoff beard like no one’s business. Shades of Scott Niedermayer anyone? …lies. That man came out of the womb with a full, furry, fantastic beard.

8:14 PM: Shaky start, solid ending. Good period overall. I like when the defense doesn’t completely suck. I also like when Captain-brunner looks like his old self.

KEEP IT GOING

8:03 PM: I LOVE JAY PANDOLFO.
_____

Holy…Johnny O-flippin-duya!

That was the hit of the playoffs right there ladies ‘n gents. I’m pretty sure poor Tuomo is still shakin’ in his skates right now…if he even remembers what skates after that boomer of an open ice hit.

KEEP IT GOING

Game 5: Hurricanes @ Devils SORTACAP!

10:08 PM: I’m gonna call it a night, boys n’ girls.  Thanks as always for hanging with me.  Goodnight!

10:05 PM: It’s funny how my Sorta-Caps always turn into LiveCaps at the end.  Devils lead the series, 3-2, game 6 in Raleigh Sunday – if the Capitals beat the Rangers tomorrow night, then our game Sunday will likely be on MSG+ at night.  If the Rangers win, our game will likely be on NBC during the day.  I’m pulling even moreso for the Caps tomorrow, ’cause, well, I got work on Sunday.

10:03 PM: Doc, doing the usual end-of-game TV stuff…”This game is a copyrighted event, you don’t want to monkey with our attorneys, ’cause they’re tough.”  Bwahahaha.

10:01 PM: Three stars:  3. Andy Greene, 2. David Clarkson, 1. Martin Brodeur.  I love Andy Greene, and I can’t stand the Hurricanes, but Ward should have been one of the three stars.

10:00 PM: YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!  Jesus Christ I could not handle letting one up late again.  Holy god.  Game over, Devils win, 1-0, and there will be at least one more playoff game at the Rock.  Oh god it feels good.

9:58 PM: Okay, after the icing it was a Hurricanes time out.  Now it’s a Devils time out, after a drive is covered by Brodeur.

9:56 PM: Oduya without a stick in the defensive zone, Martin picks up the pick and goes all the way up ice, Elias with a blast, Ward loses the rebound way out of the net but no one can connect with Ward out of position.  Eventually, Devils ice the puck, Devils time-out, and there’s 23 seconds left with a faceoff in the Devils zone.

9:55 PM: HOLY GOD WHAT GLORIOUS CHANCES!  Ward out of the net, less than a minute to go.

9:53 PM: Wow, shots are 40-39 Devils.  The goalies are by far the stars tonight.  Two minutes to go.

9:50 PM: Again, Chad LaRose is given room to move.  Again, Marty’s up to the task.  Scary nonetheless.  Four and a half minutes left.

9:49 PM: Pandolfo sprung on a glorious breakaway and stopped by Ward!  Drats!

9:47 PM: Andy Greene is playing out of his freakin’ mind.  He’s gotta be at at least a half-dozen shots, as a third-pairing defenseman.

9:46 PM: Bad defense there.  Rolston bounces it off the boards back to Martin, who’s not really paying much attention…

9:45 PM: Devils to the PP, Eaves takes…some sort of penalty.

9:43 PM: We can’t keep thinking Chad LaRose is Chad LaRose and therefore doesn’t require attention.  He’s playing out of his mind this series, stop letting him WALK RIGHT IN ON GOAL UNTOUCHED!  Luckily Marty’s not asleep.

9:40 PM: Nine minutes left in the game.  That stomachache I had during game 3?  It’s back.

9:38 PM: HUGE glove save by Cam Ward on Parise.

9:37 PM: Blue Jackets give up a goal with less than a minute left in their game, after taking a too many men on the ice penalty, and Detroit has swept Columbus.  Shame.  Philly beats Pittsburgh and lives to fight another day.

9:32 PM: Playoff hockey is hazardous to one’s health.

9:29 PM: Penalty: Killed.  Phew.

9:27 PM: Colin White’s out of the box.  Johnny Oduya’s in the box.  He done cross-checked a Hurricane.

9:25 PM: Game back on.

9:07 PM: Aaaaand that’s the end of the second.  Hurricanes will start with a minute of PP time when the third starts, and the Devils lead 1-0.

9:05 PM: White to the box for roughing with less than a minute to go in the second.

9:04 PM: Must be embarrassing, Chad LaRose, to be thrown to the ice by Brian Gionta.

9:00 PM: Blue Jackets/Red Wings game is nuts, 5-5 after 2.  C’mon Jackets!

8:59 PM: Jesus Christ, Mike Rupp.  It’s not often you can get sprung on a breakaway like that from Marty Brodeur.  The least you could do is PRETEND like you don’t have hands of marble and maybe, y’know, not get pickpocketed from behind?

8:52 PM: Okay, it was tipped by Clarkson.  I was so excited for the Mean Greene Goal-Scorin’ Machine.  Now he’s just a Mean Greene Assist-ing Machine.  I’ll take it anyway.

8:50 PM: GOAL!  Andy Greene with a rocket from the point!  Possibly tipped by Clarkson in front, 1-0 Devils!

8:46 PM: Much as I don’t like to give other team’s players affectionate nicknames, particularly pains-in-the-ass like him – but Ryan Bayda needs a nickname.  Ryan VHS Or Bayda?  Ryan Bayda-kerotine?  Ryan Alpha Bayda Parking Lot?

8:44 PM: Still no score, 12 minutes left in the second.

8:37 PM: Clarkson got sammiched by opposing sticks.  No penalty.

8:33 PM: So much for that PP.  Rolston goes down for holding, 4-on-4 for a minute or so.

8:30 PM: Second period on, it looks like Marty was indeed cut by the skate blade of the Hurricane.  He’s still out there, so I guess he’s good?  Starting the period with the fire that we need, and Tim Gleason interferes with Parise, so the Devils to the PP.

8:11 PM: No score after one.  Andy Greene is shooting like he wants to keep playing beyond tonight.  I like that.  He’s talking to Stan Fischler now, and looks weird with a playoff beard.  Devils looked good late in the period and might have scored with there were a few more minutes in the period.  Gotta come out with that kind of fire to start the second.

8:05 PM: Alright.  Alright.  Marty gets tripped, but if the last few days have done anything for me, it’s gotten me intimately acquainted with NHL rule 69.1, and since the dude who took Marty’s feet out from under him was being pushed/trying to avoid contact, it’s no penalty.  Somewhere in the resulting play, Marty picks up an interference penalty, and seems to be kind of hurt, though he’s still playing.  Might have been cut by the skate of the offending Hurricane.

8:04 PM: I…have no words.  I want to see a replay before I completely freak.

7:54 PM: THAT was the big save by Marty that we desperately needed.  Great play by Johnny O, cutting out the passing lane on that 2-on-1.

7:43 PM: Oooooh that’s rich, goalie interference on David Clarkson three minutes into the game.  Is that how it’s gonna be?

7:34 PM: Anton Babchuk, he of the four goals against the Devils and the cannon of a slapshot on the powerplay, is a healthy scratch this evening for Carolina.  Allow me to ask the same question I’m sure most New Jersey (and Carolina) fans are asking when I say…B-WHAAAAAA?

7:15 PM: Hey gang.  Can’t commit to being here all game long for a true LiveCap, so I’m going to check in every once in awhile with thoughts and observations.  Consider this an open thread for game discussion.

Dearest Patricia,

While we thank you for returning Patrik Elias safely, your continued lurking has the players concerned.

Zach Parise hasn’t been scoring (today doesn’t really count), Colin White fled the team in fear and Bobby Holik hasn’t been able to make a single Geico promotional appearance in more than a month.

While we promise to leave it all on the ice this week, we will only do so if you agree to leave your creepy mccreeperson behavior out of our facilities.

Supremely awesome,

The New Jersey Devils

Devils @ Senators LIVECAP!

10:19 PM: That’s gonna be it for me tonight gang, thanks for hanging out.  See you at the Rock on Saturday!

10:14 PM: Devils win the Atlantic Division and are locked into the number three seed – both of these determined before the game was even over.  The win tonight gives the team 50 wins on the year, a franchise record.  Montreal earned a point in Boston by sending the game to overtime, and now all eight playoff spots in the east are secured, it’s just a matter of seeding now.  Your elite eight of the east:  Boston, Washington, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Carolina, Pittsburgh, New York, Montreal.

10:13 PM: Spezza denied by Brodeur and the Devils win the shootout 2-1 and the game 3-2!

10:13 PM: Langs stopped glove side by Auld.  Still 2-1, Spezza up for Ottawa.

10:13 PM: Fisher misses to the left, remains 2-1 and if Langs scores we win.

10:12 PM: Shanahan roofs it over Auld’s glove, 2-1!

10:12 PM: Alfredsson snaps it past Marty’s glove.  1-1.

10:11 PM: Zach Parise just completely undressed Alex Auld and it’s 1-0 Devils.  Remember the goal earlier this year against Washington?  It was like that.

10:10 PM: I predict Parise, Elias, and John Madden’s stick as shootout contestants.  Also, I think I just heard the TV change to NHL Network at Scott Mackie’s house.

10:09 PM: Seriously though, I can’t remember the last time we played in a shootout, let alone the last time I LiveCapped a shootout.  Interesting.

10:08 PM: Game over, 2-2.  Wait, what’s this?  Shoot-out?  What is this…shoot…out you speak of?  Surely you jest!

10:06 PM: Zach’s never gonna score again (with deference to the -Ookies once again).  Can’t tip Oduya’s shot, nor can he pull home the rebound.  A minute to go in OT.

10:05 PM: Capitals beat Tampa, and now the Devils are officially locked into the number three seed for the playoffs.

10:03 PM: Ooooooh man Marty with one of those magician-like glove saves – entirely too flashy with that previously-injured arm, but it shut up the Sens fans for a second there.

10:01 PM: Man, I’m tired, I just wanted to go to bed.  Stupid Senators.  Overtime on.

9:59 PM: Going to overtime now.  Life isn’t fair.

9:57 PM: DAMMIT!  Sens fire one off the post that looks like it’s in, White with a good defensive play to prevent a goal, then Dany Heatley manages to pound it home.  God-friggin-dammit.  Tie game, 30 seconds left.

9:55 PM: Alex Auld on the bench for the Sens now, timeout Ottawa…A minute and a half to go and it’s still 2-1 Devils.  Meep.

9:54 PM: Two minutes to go.

9:53 PM: Lots of pressure on the Sens goal…really nice shift there.  Zach Parise must be the hardest luck 45 goal scorer in history.  Okay, probably not, but still.  Boy can’t buy a goal lately.

9:48 PM: All penalties are up now.  Six minutes left in the game.

9:43 PM: …and now the power play’s totally done.  Andy Greene takes a tripping penalty and it’ll be four-on-four for a minute, then Sens on the PP.

9:42 PM: First minor is done, two minutes to go on the PP.

9:41 PM: Gio got smooshed again.  Gio’s too easily smooshable.

9:39 PM: Ooooh, Daniel Alfredsson got pissy with a ref over a penalty and now is serving two minutes for interference (I assume) and another two for unsportsmanlike conduct.  Four minute power play for the Devils!

9:36 PM: Welp, Rangers win so they’re in the playoffs.  Sigh.  BUT, it does mean that the Devils are officially 2008-09 Atlantic Division champions!

9:35 PM: Jebus.  Marty can’t hold onto the puck and gets creamed by about 20 Devils and 14 Senators.  …I may be exaggerating a little.

9:32 PM: Ruutu takes a hook and we’re back to the PP.

9:25 PM: To borrow a line from the -Ookies of Interchangeable Parts, ZACH’S NEVER GONNA SCORE AGAIN!  Hits the post on the power play.  Shortly afterward, Martin with a drive, breaks his stick, and then breaks up an ensuing Sens breakaway WITHOUT A STICK.  Paul Martin is a defensive machine!

9:23 PM: Devils have a full two minutes of PP time to start the period.  Fresh ice, fresh legs, full length power play…surely we have to score, right?  Surely…?

9:22 PM: I love the Chuck the Duck season recap.  Almost more than the actual season recap.

9:05 PM: That’ll be the end of a much better second period.  Penalty on the Senators as time expires and it’ll be the Devils on a full two minutes of PP time when the third starts.  Yay!

9:01 PM: I wonder if John Madden’s hockey stick is also an unrestricted free agent this year, and how much it’ll cost to lock it up for three years.

8:59 PM: BRILLIANT!  The pass bounces off of John Madden’s stick – which Madden was not holding – and out of the zone.  LOVE IT!

8:58 PM: And now John Madden has no stick.  Crap.

8:58 PM: Yep, Whitey’s in the box…again…

8:57 PM: Colin White (I think) takes a hooking penalty.  Even if it wasn’t him, I’m gonna blame Colin White anyway.  Just for the hell of it.  Someone, because of Colin White, takes a hooking penalty.  So the Sens head to a PP.

8:52 PM: Leblond with a Cam Janssen-like heat-seeking missle type hit.  Awww.

8:51 PM: Nearly a two-on-one for the Devils but Zajac is a step slow and Langenbrunner misses the net on the shot.  Two-on-one the other way and Marty stones ‘em.  Phew.

8:45 PM: White and Chris Neil get pissy with one another and start bitchslapping each other – Colin won’t drop ‘em ’cause of the eye injury, and Neil won’t drop him ’cause he’s Chris Neil.  Two minutes each for roughing.

8:42 PM: Alex Auld plays another puck behind the net.  He didn’t just give it to one of the Devils this time, though.  Drats.

8:39 PM: That was Gionta’s 20th goal of the season.  Kind of sad when we’re looking at that as a milestone for Brian Gionta.

8:34 PM: WHOO!  Auld with an awful giveaway to Clarkson, who attempts the world-reknowned Clarkaround – misses terribly, but the puck slides straight out to Brian Rolston and it’s 2-1 Devils!  Also, Gionta’s goal did not come at the tail end of the power play, it came just after it ended.

8:33 PM: GIONTA!  Gio tips-in Shanahan’s shot at the very end of the power play and we’re tied!

8:32 PM: Ugh.  Terrible giveaway by Andy Greene.  On the plus side, at least he recovered and was able to play some decent Greene-fense to prevent a shot on goal.

8:30 PM: Senators take a very stupid too many men on the ice penalty while in the offensive zone, after a nice save on a very impressive drop-pass-and-shot from…a pair of Senators.  God I’m not very good at LiveCapping tonight.

8:29 PM: We be back yo.

8:12 PM: And that’s that.  1-0 Senators after one.  Sigh.  See ya in seventeen.

8:11 PM: The time remaining in the period and the power play are exactly the same.  Funky.

8:10 PM: …not a very GOOD power play, mind you, but a power play nonetheless.

8:09 PM: On a long delayed penalty, Gionta gets the puck to Zubbie, who drives, protects the puck, cuts for the goal…and falls and collides heavily with the boards.  Oh well, at least we’re on a power play now.

8:04 PM: Paul Martin was a puck-handling, puck-possession machine!  Killed the last 10 seconds on the Senators PP all by his lonesome, forcing his will on the puck carrier and qoinking it away.

8:02 PM: How did Ottawa get two Irish guys on their team?  Shannon and Kelly…I assume they’re Irish, don’t get much more Irish than that.  Also, a Devil took a penalty.  I think Colin White, but I wasn’t paying much attention.  Sorry.

8:00 PM: ‘nother odd-man rush, this time for the Sens, and Marty’s like “NUH-UH!”  ‘least he decided to pay attention tonight.  Much better save there than anything in the Toronto game.

7:58 PM: 2-on-1 with Zajac and Langenbrunner.  No goal.  No surprise.

7:55 PM: PLcubed vs. Winchester (who?).  Lots of grappling, not so much on the punching side.  “How’s your wife and my kids?” kind of affair.

7:51 PM: Elias gets sprung on a mini-breakaway but can’t do anything with it.  Why did you get those days off again Patty?

7:50 PM: All kinds of bad things are happening elsewhere tonight:  Rangers are winning, Panthers are losing…I was hoping we could get a win this evening to guarantee the division, then watch the Flyers sweep the Rangers out of the playoffs and helping Florida in.  Oh well.

7:47 PM: Elias is back too.  Only half as important as PLcubed’s return.  Rupp and Holik take a seat in the press box, much to the maniacal laughter of Jay Pandolfo.  Still no Havelid, which means there’s still a certain level of Greene-fense this evening as well.

7:46 PM: Apparently we recalled Pierre-Luc Letournau-Leblond!  OH JOYOUS HYPHEN-LOVING DAY!

7:44 PM: I rushed a post up for this?  Sigh.  1-0 Senators as Rutuu jams home a rebound.  Maybe we were better off without a LiveCap tonight…?

7:43 PM: Late start for me tonight, terribly sorry.  Game’s already underway, no score, sixteen minutes left to play in the first.  Let’s get this thing going.

Hurricanes @ Devils SORTA-CAP!

9:29 PM: Game over.  I can’t believe this, I thought this team was too good this year for the annual March swoon, but…I don’t know.  2-1 Hurricanes.  Good thing I only did a half-assed Cap tonight.  Goodnight.

9:28 PM: 10 seconds left, Devils on the offensive zone faceoff.

9:26 PM: Less than a minute to go and the Devils pull the goalie.  That missed penalty is brutal, Langs right next to the Carolina net in a goalmouth scramble.  Just brutal.  Timeout Devils.

9:24 PM: Scramble in the goal month and we can’t buy a penalty, despite Captainbrunner getting his feet taken out from under him.  I think that’s probably the end of the game for us now.

9:22 PM: Oh for eff’s sake.  Rutuu pounds home a rebound and it’s 2-1 Hurricanes.  C’mon now, this is sad.

9:21 PM: Paul Martin takes some sort of penalty.  Hooking, I guess.  Four minutes left in the game.  Gulp.

9:15 PM: Goddammit.  Clarkson can’t clear it, and eventually Samsonov bangs home a rebound.  1-1 game, and we can stop holding our collective breath for shutout 102 now.  Sad.

9:08 PM: If Zubbie’s name was Scott Stevens, there would have been a Hurricane on the ice that you’d need a ShamWow to mop up.  Alas, Zubbie ain’t Scotty, and the open ice hit didn’t even knock the other guy down.

9:00 PM: Mike Rupp takes a high sticking penalty.  Rats.

8:55 PM: That woulda been a nice breakaway if anyone but Bobby Holik were the one sprung on it.  Instead of being a breakaway, though, it became more of a one-on-two slapshot-into-the-goalie’s-crest type deal.  Sigh.

8:36 PM: Second period, over.  Remains 1-0 Devils.  Decent period, nothing great, but not god-awful, either.  CRAZY saves on each end of the ice.  Zach should be at goal #43 if not for a crazy shortstop like dive by Cam Ward, while a pair of ho-hum-just-another-wicked-insane-Marty-glove-save keeps it a slim Devils lead heading into the third.

8:25 PM: Marty with another stellar save and then a bunch of scrummy stuff in front of the net.  Some guy named Convoy and Colin White get angry at each other, and MSG+ catches them yelling at each other from their respective penalty boxes.  Funny as hell.   Also, PIERRE CHAMPIOUX SIGHTING!

8:18 PM: Dammit Cam Ward, don’t you know you’re not supposed to make stops like that on Zach Parise?  Goaltender’s duel tonight for sure, sick save for sick save.

8:14 PM: I think Zubbie is protesting the 27 Dresses picture.  Between last night and that trip…jebus Zubbie, have a sense of humor, man.  Also, flat out ridiculous save by Marty.  RI-FRIGGIN-DICULOUS.

7:43 PM: Welp, that Elias goal certainly woke me up.  Perhaps I was being unfair on this game because of my own mental state.  It wasn’t that bad, and they seemed to wake up a bit as the game went on.  Only one penalty called, against the Devils, but that’s still an improvement over the last few games.  Big hit by Patty Elias late in the period, knocking Babchuk over, which is cool by me.  Devils lead 1-0 after one.

7:38 PM: Ooooooooh!  Odd-man rush, Madden dashes in as a decoy while Gionta passes to a trailing Elias and we gots ourselves a lead!  1-0 Devils.

7:34 PM: Spoke too soon, Niclas Havelid held someone.  Great.

7:30 PM: Maybe it’s because I’M tired, but the team looks terribly tired tonight.  Marty’s bobbling pucks, passes are off the mark.  No penalties yet, at least.

7:16 PM: See?  It’s a good thing I’m only Sorta-Capping this thing.  Slow start so far.

7:09 PM: Puck’s on the ice.  Doc’s intro was…weird.

6:32 PM (Pre-game): I know what you’re thinking…”Sorta-Cap?!”  Let’s just put it this way – I don’t feel particularly well this evening.  It’s been an exhausting week.  I’m not sure I have the ability to give you a good, insightful, funny-type LiveCap.  But I also don’t wanna just, y’know, do nothing.  We’ve been doing nothing ’round here too much lately.  So, the Sorta-Cap.  I’ll update after each period and occasionally when the fancy strikes.  And if, at some point I disappear, avenge my death.  (Or I fell asleep.  Whichever.  You can still avenge me, though.)
