Thoughts from Section 209: Devils vs Caps, Nov 14, 2009

You know… it’s funny… I think I’ve grown up… a LOT in the last few years (say what you want and I know you will)… and in that time maybe a little bit, I’ve redefined what being a sports fan is to me … Yeah seeing your team win (regardless of sport)… yeah that’s awesome… but you know what really the best part of being a REAL sports fan… it’s about sitting in the same place with them all and enjoying it… I’ve been real lucky this year…. my little 209 army is growing… and boy we have a FOCUS NOW… simply put… the GREATNESS of Andy Greene…. we have a church and it meets 41 times a year in Newark… COME WORSHIP at the Altar of the GREENE MACHINE!!!! (all that and the Devils 1000th win as a franchise… nice little achievement!!)

the Good:
— the power play… I can barely remember a time when the Devils pp was good for a GOAL A GAME like it’s been the last few weeks… that’s scary good, and hell… always fun to yell EARMUFFS…. FUCK YOU SAM ROSEN!!!!!!!!!!
— Bounce-back… yeah they were down two and looked dead at the start of the game… and yeah they’d come back under Sutter even… but with Sutter it was “beat the vets into the ground” hockey… now it’s Murphy (more on him in the funny), Halischuk.. hell even Colin White with the “seeing eye goal” too… it’s a DIFFERENT… hell BETTER way to come back in a hockey game!! (and this team will benefit greatly from the young guys getting into the mix and REALLY adding to this team!)
— Tim Sestito… you’ve been initiated… thanks to Rob marking out over his assist…. it’s SESTITO SANTANA!! ARRRRIBAA!!!!
— Cory Murphy… yes even you have been saved by the Church of Greene!!! And poor Rob… he made his GF a bet that if Cory Murphy scored a pp goal… he’d buy her his jersey… he assists on the pp goal… and scores at even strength… I say he still owes her one!! Hell when he scored I chanted… HEY…. YOU’RE FUCKED and pointed at him the whole time…. it was funny!
hell even…. Lord Krang *Plays taps for rob*
— I’ll even break the ice and say… mb30 was actually pretty… GOOD… tonight… saw my first HOLY SHIT save of the year… hell other small miracles in life happened… had to throw the Ego a bone eh??

the Bad:
— ZUBBIE COUNTER DENIED… booo on you Colin White!!!!!
— well the first 5 minutes were just HARSH… but once they got past that….
— Holy Shit…. Andrew Peters is so bad he scratches himself when he plays NHL ’10!!
— I really got nothing else here… well aside of no ANDY’S BETTER chant aimed at the clearly lesser of the Green’s!!!
— all the Peanut Butter Poti comments at Tom Poti made me DAMN HUNGRY for a Peanut Butter sandwich…. if I had any in the house!

the Funny:
— Well I had a bad day today before getting to the game… work was slow (and worse.. on a Saturday…) I felt like hell… and I’m wrapping up my second computer job… it’s 430…. I’m ready to go once the AVG installs… THE DUDE PULLS OUT THE PLUG ON THE SURGE PROTECTOR and damn near outs the WHOLE OFFICE *sigh*… least he slipped me $20 and I was out the door by 5!
— I’m all at the game… all relaxed… ate my nachos… all ready for warmups… and then this:
I get stuck with the most complete and total moron by me in warmups:
First he goes “I’m gonna throw this beer on the caps when they come out”…um how are you going to do that from the zamboni entrance??
And then he calls ovechkin as big a pussy as crosby?? Really take your god hoodie and get the fuck out of my arena!!… or better sent out to Anaheim to root for the pond scum as he tries to make more stupid bragger comments to the girl with him (it was so seriously bad I typed out on my phone to the girl next to me “I don’t mean to be rude or a jerk, but this guy could possibly be the stupidest guy on the planet and I want to hurt him!!”… she laughed 😀
— Got my Andy Greene jersey from the NHL Store in the mail on Friday… yay… the problem is this lil “fatass” lost too much weight and the XL Jersey is kinda… gigantic…. and it’s more like I have an Andy Greene SNUGGIE…. more then a damn jersey… but I guess our Andy is snuggie-worthy!!!
— the “Jose… Joseeeeeee” chant at Theodore

(****NEW****) the Andy Greene Section of WORSHIP!!!!:
— Scott Mackie: Andy Greene did not miss that puck, it was part of a grander play that none of us mortals can understand!!
— Scott Mackie: Wow what a pass breakup and block by Greene!!
Rob: is it me or is greene the 2nd coming of Jesus?
No, jesus was the pre-cum of andy sir!!
— Lord Krang: hey, Andy Greene is go great, he even makes his teammates do the impossible. see Murphy, Colin white tonight
— Tammie Hamilton…the caps pbp says the mike green and Andy Greene are not related just so you know………..
** Lord Krang…because the e for excellent at the end of Andy’s name didn’t already tip us off to that…
** Scott Mackie: I think we can all admire having an extra “E” in my life had benefited me again ?
** Tammie Hamilton like tammiE 😉 lol
** Lord Krang i ? this thread
** Scott Mackie…Soooo I was about to make a jets joke, rob’s friend paul goes “hey no talk of pain when andy greene is on the ice”….kick/wham breakaway goal…
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH PARISE!!!!
(Funny how the more homage we paid to the Greene machine the more the WHOLE TEAM was scoring!!)
— Scott Mackie “Andy Greene won the 2005 stanley cup…by himself!!”
And again we make an awesome Greene joke and we score
That’s awesome!!!!!
(see, living proof, thank you facebook!!)
— Josh Burnett: yea, though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, i shall fear no evil, for Andy Greene bat the living shit out of it. (we scored again FYI)
— Scott Mackie: Andy Greene is so good that he gets a plus one on pp goals!!!
— Lord Krang Official stats so far: Andy Greene, 0 assists, +3. Mike Green, 2 assists, -1
(Andy Greene is so much better we need not chant, we KNOW)

Well there ya go… damn that was fun again… thanks to all who helped add to the greatness of Andy Green… mass is over… you may now face-check in peace!!!

Bye Bye Brent…thanks for the almost…

Least for once a coach left on his own terms and didn’t get shitcanned right before the playoffs…. (maybe that would have been good this time eh??)

Here’s your link and since it’s on the internets it must be true right??

So once again the Devils quest for the guy behind the bench to lead the ship maybe possibly out of the first round for once???

Lots to think about here… and let’s see since I suck at news reporting and I’m better at retelling things… I should stick with it…

The good of the Brent Era:
— forechecking and attack hockey was brought to the Devils and it actually did WORK for the most… no more is this team team defense first, second, third and forth.. thank God… cause that shit don’t work no more in the NHL
— THIS TEAM WON 50 GAMES WITHOUT MB30 AS THE STARTING GOALIE… think about that.. find me another coach in this FRANCHISE’S history that can claim that

The bad of the Brent Era:
— the reversion to the chicken-shit hockey in the playoffs… and not to mention two seriously painful first round losses
— the inability to bring and develop any quality rookies on this team.. throughout the years the Devils usually add in one or two quality rookies and they contribute to the team.. this did not happen under Sutter (now is this a knock on the quality young players in the system… maybe?)
— no trips beyond the first round… so is good still not good enough when better is expected?? Or is the bar officially starting to lower in NJ?

What’s next??
— Jacques Lemaire?? Oh GOD NO… talk about a step backward…
— Peter Laviolette?? Could be … but doesn’t seem like a “Lou guy” which adds to his appeal now….
— Ted Nolan?? Again a pipe dream…
— John MacLean… seems likely, but there’s a reason he’s been passed by so many times before….

Personally I have NO clue who I wanna see coach… I hope to hell it’s not some retread or “defensive guru” guy… we were going in the right way and we MUST keep in this direction to be successful in the post-lockout NHL.

Opinions kids??

The Day After

It’s been said over and again, by Scott last night, by comments both here and elsewhere, by talking heads on TV.  Last night, simply, was amazing.

I sat down to try to put something up on this blog before heading back to my much-less-thrilling day job, and I wasn’t sure what I was going to say.  I’m 60 words into this thing and I still don’t know, really.

I do know that last night’s game re-affirmed my love for this game, for this team, for that goaltender, for this franchise.  I’ve never been to a Stanley Cup Final game – I can only imagine that the atmosphere in the Rock last night was as close as it gets without Lord Stanley’s mug riding on the outcome of the game.

I love that this game fell on St. Patrick’s Day.  There was a nice, loose atmosphere to the crowd – whether it was the history-in-the-making aspect, the beer flowing pre-and-during game, or (most likely) a healthy combination of both, it made the Rock truly feel like home for perhaps the first time.  Sure, there was the stray Blackhawks fan (and the obligitory guy in a Rangers jersey despite their team actually playing a pretty important game at the same time), but last night, the Prudential Center was the DEVILS building.  That is what it should have felt like during last year’s playoffs, and hopefully will feel like this year.

I love that Patrik Elias’ record-setting assist was a primary assist, and that everyone in the building saw the play and recognized it for what it was instantly.  The eruption for Patty’s assist was worth the price of admission alone, regardless of Marty’s feat.  I love that the response to Patty’s record-breaking point was so intense and so overwhelming that I actually had to look up who scored the goal just now, because for the life of me, I couldn’t remember.  It was Brian Gionta, by the way, and it was shorthanded.

I love that there was no scripted cheesy celebration after the game, that Gary Bettman didn’t hit the ice to shake Marty’s hand and present him with a plaque.  There will be time for that before another game, but the celebration last night was rightfully focused on Brodeur.  As awkward as it became after a few minutes, I love that he was given scissors and cut down the net.  I love that the rest of the team jumped in to help out so Marty could take his victory lap.  Without his team, he wouldn’t have won one game, let alone 552, and without his team, he would still be cutting that net down this morning.

I love that we had the greatest play-by-play man in all of hockey (and arguably all of sports) in house to call the historic game, just as we have the greatest play-by-play man in all of hockey to call every game, historic or mundane.  Doc Emrick, as we’ve stated many times on this blog, is one of the greatest perks to being a Devils fan.  We’re lucky to have him.

We’re a lucky fan base in general, I think it’s safe to say.  We’ve got the greatest goalie of all time.  We’ve got the greatest point-scorer in Devils history on the ice right now.  We’ve got the greatest announcer.  We’ve got three Stanley Cups, four Eastern Conference championships, seven Atlantic Division championships, sixteen consecutive winning seasons, eleven consecutive playoff appearances.  A good number of those will likely go up by the time this season’s over.

We’ve also got among the greatest fans in hockey.  Let’s face it, it’s not always easy to be a Devils fan.  We’re too quiet.  We can’t fill our building most nights.  We’ve got a preoccupation with the team on the other side of the Hudson.  We’ve heard all of that before and undoubtly will continue to hear it for a long time.

But last night – last night I was proud of our fan base.  Proud of our franchise.  Proud of our owner, GM, coach, team, game-day crew, ushers, building, city, state.  Last night was one of the greatest nights I have ever experienced as a Devils fan.  A night I will never forget.  Thank you, Mr. Brodeur.  Thank you, Mr. Elias.  Thank you, Mr. Lamoriello, Mr. Vanderbeek, Mr. Sutter.  Thank you, Mr. Langenbrunner, Mr. Clemmensen, Mr. Weekes, Mr. Martin, Mr. Parise, Mr. Zubrus, everyone who’s ever skated with a Devils crest on their chest.  Thank you to everyone involved in getting that building where it is, to the people who make the games happen every night.

Thank you to those who read what we have to say on this site, whether you like us or…not so much.  Thank you, Devils fans.  Last night was special, because of all of us.  Hopefully, this is not the last time that building feels like it did last night.

…not bad for not knowing what I wanted to say, eh?

Thoughts from Section 209…. Devils/Islanders, 2/11/2009

Well it wasn’t pretty and the game itself was not so fun… but this is why you sit in Section 209… something ALWAYS happens and it makes even the dullest of Islander stompings into a fun. one-of-a-kind night! So much storytelling to do I just wanna get to it!!!!

the Good:
— It’s ok to go just a LITTLE gay guys…. when it comes to Zach Parise… really… let it go….. one big AAAHHHHHHHHH, HE’S DREAMY… you’ll see!!
— Weekes was good… not special… but damn good to see the brotha get a game in net in his freaking month!! (and no matter how many times I made the joke tonight the girl next to me was NOT getting it… if I made a Jew joke, she’d been on it like white on rice mofo!!)
— how many times do the Devils put up a 50-burger in the shot column and WIN?? Damn!!!!
— Shoot-comment at standard Rangers fans at game when they celebrated the Islanders goal:
“Hey they did in ONE shot and 3 minutes what you couldn’t do in a FULL GAME… stop cheering!!”
— Andy Greene made some nifty-ass plays tonight!
— Paul Martin had a subtle 3-assist game… kinda the way I like my defenders to be.. on the scoresheet and not too noticed!
— MV-PARISE!!!! Get on the damn bandwagon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— and hell they won one that very much had classic letdown on it looking the games played last week and the ones coming this weekend, so I’d call that one helluva win!!!
— I kept telling the Islander fan tonight… “two points closer to Tavares sir!!”

the Bad:
— Good Lord, the Islanders…. but I’ll say this… if Bettman wants this team to stay in Long Island (and you can BET he doesn’t).. when this team bottoms out and has the worst record in the league… if they get Tavares it could be the player to save and turn that franchise around… players will want to come there to play with him…. fans will show up again… this is the ray of hope the Islanders NEED (and I want them to stay) and get them back and maybe even get the arena on track again… you rigged a lottery for Crosby… CMON BETTMAN!!!
— Gionta had one of his “you must be THIS tall to score” nights and we know he’s not tall, but this was a night to get away with it!
— Come to think of it… that whole first period was enough to make you want some coffee!!!
— Come to think more of it.. I’ve never seen what felt like such an uninspired effort get 50 shots (bless you oh top line!)
— Jay Pandolfo… nice to see the hands didn’t soften in your exile!

the funny:
— OK, so anyone who knows me and where I sit and all my stupid quirks and how I’ll let the dumbest thing send me off the handle and on a federal witch-hunt to seek and destroy any random assholes who get in my way… you KNEW this was coming:
on my way up to my seat in 209… you know the SAME one I had since day one, the same one I will have when this place is torn down…. I get asked to show my ticket…..
Problem #1: I sit in the SECOND CHEAPEST SEATS IN THE ARENA.. who’s gonna move up there?? (ok everyone does :p)….and it’s not like you REALLY LOOK… it’s a bullshit gesture that simply annoys me… I have work, life and the US Govt to do that… I don’t need it at games, so I don’t acknowledge it
Problem #2: As ushers… you have two jobs… get people to their seats fast… and MAKE THEM WAIT FOR THE FUCKING WHISTLE… and really you do NEITHER… so until you do the part of the job I ACTUALLY care about… I am not helping you on your bullshit annoyances…..

So you can imagine when the lil lady asked for my ticket and I told her I’ll do it when you make people wait for the dam whistle during play and kept going… THAT went over well (and I have WITNESSES up the wazoo that I did this and this is not some bullshit fan boy fiction!)

So I keep going… and uh-oh.. here comes mister supervisor… I think 5 or 6 people knew where this was GOING!!!
He makes the mistake of asking me what my issue is… I told him and I was not too peachy about it either mister, about my issues with the ushers and how I am sick and tired of clueless dopes standing in the aisle during power plays when the ushers should be making them wait till play stops!!
“they’re people sir”
“no they’re dopes”
“people”
“I’ll tell ya what… come on my side of the fence as an attendee… you’ll see… they ARE DOPES!!”
He promises to make them stop people before the whistle and he’s like…. you feel better… want me to let you rant more… at that point I let him off and tell him he could retire sitting there letting me air all my bitches at him!!! (the funniest part was I was trying like hell to not laugh but people thought I was really pissed… it’s kinda like watching me at a Football Sunday (and GOD I MISS THOSE)… it seems angry but damn it’s in fun!)… and I even turned to Xavier and told him damn that felt good!!
— Moral of the story… 6:00 into the period… people randomly walking all over the section *eyeroll*
— Best Sammy Woo line of the night…..
Gimme a … P…..A……R….. I…..S……E!!
Nah that don’t work…. too long….
Gimme a…… Z……A…….K
(everyone) IT’S C!!!
…. AND ANOTHER K !!!!
IT’S AN H!!!!!!
…. we tried!!!!

(Good God.. I do it again on Friday… bring the rage!!!)
